| 摘要 | There are two main types of research in Buddhist Studies: document research and field research. The document research focuses on primary sources, for instance the canon (P: Tipiṭaka; Skt: Tripiṭaka), commentaries (P: Aṭṭhakathā), and Buddhist scriptures of numerous Buddhist sects written in various languages, such as Sanskrit, Classical Chinese, and Tibetan. This category of research is considered as “basic research” or “pure research” based on existing evidence. On the other hand, the field research is a study on a relationship between Buddhist teachings and shaping attitudes, behaviors, and society. This type of research is “applied research.” The majority of research in Buddhist Studies in Thailand tends to be the field research, and even there are few research papers applying a method of the document research, but most of their sources are only from Pali scriptures. Papers based on a comparative study with other Buddhist scriptures are rare, whereas it is common for Buddhist Studies in other countries, for example Europe and Japan, to focus more on the document research. This paper has discussed the research in Buddhist Studies beginning from Ancient Indian Philosophy to Early Buddhism, Abhidharma Buddhism, and Early Mahayana by providing cases of the research in Buddhist Studies in Japan. The research in Japan emphasizes “horizontal method of text-critical research” which compares parallel texts from different sects in the same eras. Also, “vertical method of text-critical research” is used to study the development of various perspectives by working in extensive scriptures with several ancient languages. |
