摘要
신라 十二支神像의 선행조건으로서 사천왕사 壇席을 지목하였다. 이는 圓孔을 지닌 12점의 초석이 金堂 후방 좌우 土壇 위에 각기 동서에 대칭으로 도합 24점이 배치되었다. 이들을 壇席으로 볼 수 있었던 것은 그 초석이 지닌 특수한 구조, 당시 유행한 대칭의 미술, 그리고 두 쌍의 十二支像을 지닌 遠願寺 동서쌍탑에서 상징성의 原形과 變容을 지목하였다. 무엇보다 壇席으로 추정된 이 유구의 초석은 治石과 구조가 특이하여 일반 塔址나 여타 건물지의 초석과 달리 화려하며, 圓孔을 시설한 것이 바로 經文에 나오는 ‘文豆婁 圓木’의 揷入孔입을 알게 하였다. 또한 후지시마 등이 주장한 經樓, 鐘樓, 또는 鼓樓說 등은 모두 근거가 없는 막연한 견해가 되었고, 정교하고 정치한 초석의 몰딩 역시 圓孔柱座의 노출을 목적으로 한 특수한 유구로서 종교적 功能을 목적으로 하는 壇席으로 볼 수 있었다. 또 五方神과 그 권속의 개념은 제석천과 사천왕을 중심으로 하는 하위개념으로서의 팔부중, 십이지로 전개되었다. 아울러 삼국유사의 瑜珈明僧十二員은 불경에 등장된 圓木文豆婁의 상징이며, 이들이 현존 壇席의 圓孔에 삽입됨으로써 신라 십이지의 원초적 조형으로 등장되었다고 하겠다.
This paper is to study the platform stone of Guardians Temple of the Four Heavenly Kings. The platform stones have a meaning that they become the precedent condition of the zodiacal animals. The twelve foundation stones with hole placed symmetrically on the mud platform are stationed at both sides of the rear side of the main hall. The reason why these foundation stones are considered as the platform stone is the unique structure of the foundation stone, the symmetrical art, and the symbolism and the transfiguration of the zodiacal animals carved on the double stupas of Wonwonsa temple. The foundation stones considered as the platform stones that have the special structure are different from the those of stupa site and building site. Also the hole carved on the foundation stone is to prove the hole of Munduru(Skt. Mudra) timber. In addition the hypothesis submitted by Fujishima came to the vague view without basis. The elaborate molding of the foundation stone is a unique remains that has a purpose to expose round post plinth. The concepts of Five Directions Gods and the community were developed as Eight Congregated Devas and the zodiacal animals as the subordinate concepts on the basis of Sakra-devanam indra and Four Guardians. In addition the famous twelve Yoga monks records of Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms are the symbol of round timber Munduru. As they are inserted in the hole, they began to be appeared as the origin of the zodiacal animals in Silla Period.
