모든 존재자들의 상호 연관성이라는 주제는 생태학과 불교가 공유하고 있는 중심 사상이다. 1960년대 미국과 유럽을 중심으로 일어난 생태계와 환경에 대한 관심과 운동이 그 이론적 근거를 마련하기 위해 종교와의 결합을 모색하기 시작할 때, 환경론자와 불교학자 양측 모두 그 어떤 종교보다도 불교가 환경윤리 내지는 생태철학에 가장 적합한 종교사상이라는 점을 인식하였다. 1996년 5월부터 1998년 10월까지 하바드 대학의 세계 종교 연구 센터(Center for the Study of World Religions)에서 ‘종교와 생태학’을 주제로 일련의 포럼을 개최하였을 때 그 첫 번째가 바로 ‘불교와 생태학’이었다. 이른바 EcoBuddhism에 대한 최근의 논의는 크게 참여주의와 원전비판의 두 경향으로 갈린다. 참여불교적 논리를 주장하는 I. Harris와 C. Cantwell은 각기 남방 불교와 티벳 불교의 문화적 전통을 주목하여 이를 분석함으로써 현재의 생태 위기를 극복할 수 있는 대안을 제시하고, L. Schmithausen은 역사학적이고 문헌학적인 관점을 중시하면서 원전에 대한 비판적 분석을 통하여 환경윤리적 대안을 모색해야 한다는 입장에 서있다. 서구의 불교학자들이 안고 있는 한계인 초기 불교와 티벳 불교 및 일본적인 선사상에 경도되어 있다는 사실은 바로 이들을 중심으로 논의되고 있는 불교생태학의 경우에도 그대로 적용될 수 있다.
The interdependence of all beings is a common idea in ecology and Buddhism. Thus Buddhism may be a likely candidate for the first religious tradition because it appears to have a special affinity with ecological concerns. The basic Buddhist philosophy of karmic causality and dependent origination stresses the interdependence of all sentient beings. A series of conferences about religion and ecology held from 1996 to 1998 at the Harvard University Center for the Study of World Religions, and the first subject for discussion was 'Buddhism and Ecology'. Recently current on the EcoBuddhism might be be divided into two tendencies, engaged Buddhism and textual criticism. I. Harris and C. Cantwell who sympathize with engaged Buddhist movements suggest an alternative idea for today's ecological crises by analyzing the cultural traditions of Theravada and Tibetan Buddhism. L. Schmithausen is searching for solutions to the environmental problem through the critics on the Buddhist texts from historical and philologist viewpoint. But the western Buddhism, as well as EcoBuddhism, are generally under a bias toward early Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism or Japanese Zen Thoughts.
