우리와 다른 동물과의 차이는 종류의 차이(difference of kind)가 아닌 정도의 차이(difference of degree)일뿐이다. It is often said that the 21st century should be a century of culture. However, the reality isn’t like that. Today’s key word is only civilization, but the culture is just our hope. That’s because culture should be based on moral ethics. A civilization, which is absent from ethic, destroys, loses and decomposes all kinds of lives. We, human beings, have a belief in that there is a conspicuous difference or discontinuity in the metaphysical aspect between animals or other life forms and us, and we have excluded them from the subject to be considered in ethical perspective. We have believed that such a unique and original attributes as reasoning power, language, use of tools and the like are a sphere that can be dominated by humans. However, such uniqueness or originality of human has been proved a false, and it is nothing, but no more than a deluded belief. It has been discovered that human is not a only living creature who can use language and tools. Human is no more supreme creature amongst all creation. Man is just one of animal species called Homo Sapiens that consists of echo system. We shouldn’t justify, nor to neglect the reckless violence committed by just one species so called Homo sapiens any longer. In modern ethics, it is thought that the center of universe is not man but nature, and the most dignified creation is not mankind but a life itself, and other life forms than human shouldn’t be excluded from the ethical community. In addition, taking a different stance from that we used to take, it clearly propounds that those aggressive attitudes toward nature, subjugation without mercy, reckless development and exploitation as well as indifference and non-consideration of animals who suffer, all of which are affronts against nature cannot be condoned in the perspective on ethics. However, such a exhortation has already been posed in Buddhism. |
