The development of Tibetan Buddhism was closely linked to the traditional Shamanistic factors that had existed before Buddhism. The unique development of living Buddha and samsara thought is a form of pure Buddhism, but Tantric Buddhism in Tibet such as holy words, incantation, hand position, and invocation were influenced by Shamanism and Shamanistic Bon. Tantric Buddhism in India contains incantational element, but in Tibet added Shamanism. Spiritism still remains a part of Tibetan culture and folk custom and is harmonious with Buddhism. The Tibetan Shaman also remains a national Shaman who can read and foretell a god's will through estaxis like a Syvelian Shaman. They are a part of Buddhism. Most of all, even though popular Shamanism could be suppressed by Buddhism, it still performs rituals of sacrifice and spiritism on a local level. The local people are able to accept the two systems without any trouble. The religion of ancient Bon co-exists with Buddhism, but most of all, the Bon religion follows the Buddhist system. Tibetan Buddhism played a role in the development of Tantric Buddhism that emphasized incantation during its fusion with Shamanism. This Tantric Buddhism teaches how to attain awakening and happiness for its followers. Even if Tibetan Buddhism was fused with Shamanistic elements, they maintain the aspect of awakening. What Tibetan Buddhism tries to convey as its message is the spirit of peace and mercy. This two goals of peace and mercy not only exist for human beings but also for mountains, lake, river, sea along with all living things. Tibetan Buddhism can offer a solution to today's problems such as the environment and terrorism. |
