摘要
四種釋을 통한 경문해석의 목적은 무엇인가. 그것은 깨달음을 위한 것이다. 따라서 四種釋은 일반적인 경문 해석과는 큰 차이가 있다. 쉽게 말하면 경문을 해석만 해도 깨달음을 얻을 수 있다는 것이다. 四種釋 즉 因緣釋, 約敎釋, 本迹釋, 觀心釋으로 해석해 가는 가운데 깨달음을 얻는다는 것이 바로 핵심이다. 더욱이 ‘如是我聞’과 같은 한 구절만 가지고서도 깨달음을 얻을 수 있다는 확신이 담겨져 있기도 하다. 이러한 智顗 경전관의 토대는, 경전 자체를 비롯하여 경전에 나오는 모든 것을 인정하는 것이다. 경전 성립의 연원을 캐기 위한 것이 아니라 경전을 그대로 佛說로 믿고 신행하는 것이다. 또한 여기서 간과할 수 없는 것은 경전에 대한 풀이이다. 즉 智顗는 경문을 마음이라고 보는 것이다. 『法華經』의 문구해석을 통하여 경전이 바로 마음이라는 사실을 깨우치라는 것이다. 그런 기반 위에서 경전의 문구를 해석하는 四種釋은, 因緣釋을 통해서는 중생에게 흥미를 주고, 선심을 갖게 하며, 번뇌를 끊게 하며, 마지막으로 第一義의 진리의 세계로 귀의시킨다. 이어서 約敎釋을 통해서는 道의 세계에 들어온 중생을 점차 교화하여 장교에서 통교로, 통교에서 별교로, 별교에서 원교에 도달케 하여, 원교의 실상의 세계로 끌어 올리는 것이다. 그리고 本迹釋을 통해서는 근본의 모습을 보임으로써 새로운 안목을 갖추게 하고, 마지막 觀心釋을 통해서는 그 불타가 내 마음임을 보여주는 것이다. 그렇다면 四種釋을 통하여 法華經을 해석한 이유는 분명해진다. 종래 주석적 연구에서 벗어나 경전을 통해 깨달음을 얻고자 하는 上求菩提心으로부터 비롯되었다고 할 수 있다. 사실 경전은 바로 깨달음의 열쇠라고 할 수 있으며 또 깨달음의 척도라고 할 수 있다. 이런 점에서 본다면 경전을 가지고 바로 깨우치는 證悟는 바로 불교의 본 모습이기에, 『法華文句』의 해석법인 四種釋은 바로 佛知見을 開示悟入시키는 것이다. 이런 점에서 四種釋의 연구 및 활용은 깨달음을 얻기 위한 방법으로서 불교의 본분을 찾는 데에 적지 않은 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다.
T'ien-T'ai Buddhism is different from other sects of Buddhism. For instance, they intensively emphasis on using of [Four Varitie Ways of Analyzing:四種釋] method to analyze the Sūtras. T'ien-T'ai Buddhism strongly believes that [Four Varitie Ways of Analyzing:四種釋] method takes very important role in attaining enlightenment. What differs T'ien-T'ai Buddhism from other sects of Buddhism? T'ien-T'ai Buddhism enforces that there are four different ways to analyze the Sūtras. T'ien-T'ai Buddhism lectures that if a living being uses [Four Varitie Ways of Analyzing:四種釋], it guarantees of achieving the enlightenment. Attain the enlightenment by using [Analyzing by cause and occasion/ Analyzing by endurance/Analyzing by primarily/Analyzing by penetration of the mind : 因緣釋/約敎釋/本迹釋/觀心釋] are core of [Four Varitie Ways of Analyzing:四種釋]. It is confident that one can reach enlightenment by deeply studying any of the phrases in the Sūtras. Perhaps studying as a short phrase like ‘如是我聞’ can attain enlightenment. Chih-i(智顗) accepted and believed the Sūtras as the Buddha's preaching, and practiced its faith. Chih-i believed that Sūtra itself can be subscribed as our minds. Chih-i tells us to analyze the phrases in the 『Lotus Sūtra』 to attain the enlightenment using [Four Varitie Ways of Analyzing:四種釋] method. [Analyzing by cause and occasion/ Analyzing by endurance/Analyzing by primarily/Analyzing by penetration of the mind : 因緣釋/約敎釋/本迹釋/觀心釋] can be explained as followings; Chih-i clarifies the meanings of analyzing the 『Lotus Sūtra』 by using the [Four Varitie Ways of Analyzing:四種釋], and he tried to escape from the former ways of analyzing style. He argued that meditation was not the only way to attain enlightenment. On the other hand, one can study and deeply understanding of the Lotus Sūtra is another way to attain enlightenment. Chih-i believed that Sūtra itself was the key to the enlightenment, and this is what Buddhism should be, because there is no difference between one's mind and Sūtra. As this point of view studies on the [Four Varitie Ways of Analyzing:四種釋] can be very useful to attain the enlightenment and find the true meanings of Buddhism.
