Despite its history of 1,500 years, Korean Buddhism unreasonably lacks studies on the culture passed down within the people's lives. The Buddhist culture appeared as the top priority asset of cultural contents, but when looking into the inner side, basic research and studies that should have been done already remain as a blank. Therefore, in order to prepare a positive foundation for understanding how Buddhism progressed which exchanged with civilians, this study presents the necessity of basic research and studies as well as the general methodology by examining three areas that have been passed on as intangible assets and are the core of Buddhism in life. First is the issue of restoring the Buddhist culture and way of life that have been transmitted to the people through research and studies on the Saha village. Saha village is the transmission site of Buddhist culture and is the actual place where the subjects of transmission live. Doing research for filling in the blanks of recent Buddhist life-cycle by clarifying how Buddhism maintained a relationship with the folk society is an urgent matter. Combining and implementing village research with studies on oral history together would be appropriate. The second issue is to restore Buddhist life rituals that humans experience at each crucial moments as they live on, and to reestablish it modernly. Not only 'Birth' as a person is born as a member of a community for the first time, entering the 'adult stage‘ as the person acts and is treated as an adult, 'marriage' as the person creates his or her own family, being reborn as an 'elderly person' in the sexagenary cycle year of the person's birthyear, but also 'death ritual’ which is the stage of entering the afterlife from the present world, 'ancestral ritual‘ as the person settles as an ancestor and confronts regularly with his or her descendents are the life rituals that forms basis of social life. Rituals and customs throughout a person's lifetime are the most fundamental way of life. Genuine Buddhism in life cannot be accomplished without the Buddhist explanation on this matter. The third issue is to restore the Buddhist seasonal customs that divides a year into proper time periods by the circulation of nature and repeating this over and over, and to reestablish this into a modernly way. Seasonal customs are acts that form the basis of the natural life of humans. They is passed down as a general cultural phenomenon on holidays and 24 divisions in the lunar calendar which are the seasonal custom of the people. Buddhist customs which have been established based on Buddhist calendar or Buddhist background are being transmitted at temples and homes on each seasonal custom. Folk seasonal customs and various customs of Buddhist that adapt to the circulation of nature form the basis of life along with life rituals. It |
