Can I know myself who perceive the world? Is self-perception of the self possible? Can a mind see the mind? This thesis compares the philosophical stances of the ‘consciousness only’ philosopher of Shilla, Won-Cheuk, and the German transcendental idealist Kant using the metaphor of ‘can an eye see the eye?’ First of all, the primary meaning of ‘a mind seeing the mind’ for Won-Cheuk and Kant is demonstrated in the thesis. A mind perceives the world, and the world does not differ from the mind for it is composed by the mind; and accordingly we can say that a mind sees the mind. It is possible to conclude thus because the world is not an objective reality but an imaginative reality formed by the mutative activity of the mind; and here the mind signifies the comprehensive mind including the subjective and the objective self, the ‘Eighth consciousness(阿 賴耶識)’ or ‘the transcendental self.’ A mind sees the mind in the world, yet it sees the image, the shadow of the mind which is composed by the mind. Then is it also possible to know the mind itself beyond the image composed by the mind’s mind? Kant argues that perceiving the transcendental self beyond the phenomenal self is impossible for human beings lack intellectual intuition. On the contrary, Won-Cheuk claims that it is possible to perceive the mind itself, oneself or the real self through the ascetic practice that opens toward the inner mind and finally reaches conformity. This thesis investigates the significance of Won- Cheuk's ascetic practice, conformity and enlightenment and also discusses the difference between Won-Cheuk’s practice and the conscious self-reflection.
