In the recent years, Koreans has been recording the highest suicide rates among the OECD nations. Although the reasons can be explained in many ways, in reality, this is nothing short of a national shame. This paper summarizes the fundamental position of Buddhism, which has the image of belief of respect- for-life that is stronger than any other religious systems, on how to view the suicide issue amid such a social environment that downplays value of life. It is true that suicide cases of Buddhist monks and Buddha's way of response to them are illustrated in rather a confusing manner in the scriptures. This is because, more than anything, Buddha, who emphasizes the precept ‘do-not-kill-all living things’, comes across on the surface as actually being tolerant of some suicides of Buddhist monks. Regarding this, largely two types of interpretation are deemed possible. First, Buddha's position is seen to show a reserved attitude on judgement of the good and bad of suicide. By permitting suicides or by prohibiting suicides, depending on the circumstances faced by a person, Buddha did not offer an absolute judgement criterion on suicide. Second, Buddha only offered an human sympathy and pity for suicide chosen by old monks with serious illness; his position considers the fact that there was no act that violated the purpose of the precept ‘do-not-kill-all living things.’ Here, the author of this paper would kike to support that Buddha under on circumstances has permitted suicides that violated the precept ‘do-not-kill-all living things.’ It's because this position is consistent with the non-violence belief that Buddha wanted from the beginning to the end. At such a line of extension of recognition, the author of this paler introduces the mine types of suicide prevention programs of Buddhism that proposed by Chamlong Disayavanish and Primprao Disayavanish of the Chiang Mai University in Thailand. In fact, the practice recommendations of these two scholars may be considered as having no specific information. However, viewing in light of the realistic situation of Buddhism in Korea, one may put hopes on such “Buddhismization of routine values and routinization of the Buddhist values” actually becoming a useful means of suicide prevention. Personally, it is wished that the position of Buddhist Bioethics that has a great interest in the social practices for prevention of suicides while steadfastly denying them be reiterated. Furthermore, it is believed that this can become a new missionary strategy that conforms to the life-friendly characteristics of the modern society. |
