摘要
본 고찰은 근현대 불교 공간에서 특별한 행적을 보인 조종현(1906~1989)의 삶과 불교사상을 만해 한용운과의 상관성의 측면에서 정리한 논고이다. 조종현의 주요 행적은 시조시인, 동요작가, 강백, 불교개혁가, 교육자 등을 거론할 수 있다. 그러나 그에 대한 연구는 문학적인 측면에서 이루어졌을 뿐 불교계에서의 활동, 불교사상 등에 대서는 거의 시도되지 않았다. 그는 승려이었고, 한용운과 함께 불교개혁 활동을 한 측면을 고려하면 이는 납득하기 어렵다. 그래서 필자는 본고에서 조종현과 관련된 불교계의 활동을 조망하면서 조종현 불교사상의 근간을 추출하고자 하였다. 그런데 조종현의 행적은 만해 한용운과의 관련성을 배제할 수 없다. 이는 필자가 이전에 수행한 연구 즉, 學人大會(1928), 卍黨(1930), 조선불교청년총동맹(1931) 등을 정리하면서 파악한 내용이다. 요컨대 조종현은 한용운의 영향을 받아 불교개혁운동에 나섰고, 시조 분야에서 창작활동을 하였기 때문이다. 이런 전제에서 이 글에서는 학인대회, 조선불교청년총동맹, 만당에서의 조종현과 한용운의 인연과 영향을 우선 살핀다. 그리고 『불교』지에서의 조종현과 한용운의 관련도 분석한다. 나아가서는 조종현이 한용운 사상을 계승한 측면도 조망하려고 한다. 이 글이 조종현의 생애와 사상, 한용운 사상의 계승 분야 연구에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.
This research is for the life and Buddhist thought of Jo Jonghyeon (1906~1989), who showed special footsteps in the space of modern Buddhism. It can be said for his main whereabouts that were a poet, a children's book author, an instructor, a buddhist innovator, and an educator et cetera. However, the studies for him have been done only in the literary aspect, there has been no trial for his activities and buddhist thought in the world of Buddhism. It's hard to accept, as considering the parts of his priesthood, and the activity of buddhist innovation with Han Yong'un. So, I wanted to look over the sources of Jo Jonghyeon's buddhist thought, illuminating the activities related to him in this paper. It's difficult to exclude the correlations with Han Yong'un, when it comes to Jo Jonghyeon's whereabouts. This is the content I found out as taking a look on 學人大會(1928), 卍黨(1930), Assembly of Youths in Joseon Buddhism (1931), the previous studies I made. For example, Jo Jonghyeon led the Buddhist innovation movement as receiving some influences from Han Yong'un, and created poems in the field of Sijo. Based on this, I will take a look on the relationship and influence between Jo Jonghyeon and Han Yong'un in a School priests contest, the assembly of Youths in Joseon Buddhism, and Mandang. And also I analyze correlations of Jo Jonghyeon and Han Yong'un in the magazine of ‘Buddhism’. Moreover, I'll illuminate the aspect of his succession by the thought of Han Yong'un. I look forward to having this paper helpful to the studies on Jo Jonghyeon's life and thought, the field of succession by the thought of Han Yong'un.
