Dharmaguptaka Vinaya refers to various types of cleanliness and sanitation related not only to personal but also to public life. Also mentioned are eating, baragha, using bathrooms and toilets in public life, as well as cleanliness of one's body, clothes, and bedding and healthy diets and remedies related to one's personal life. From this, it can be understood that the most important basis of the Sangha's way of life is cleanliness. The book mentions various forms of hygiene to be practiced: washing hands before going out to beg for alms and after returning, before and after eating food and drinking water, and after using the toilet. It even stipulates how to maintain clean feet and nails. This means personal cleanliness and hygiene were equated to maintaining one's appearance. Cleanliness and hygiene were directly related to the īryāpatha of an ascetic. Keeping the body clean was included in the cila Paramita. The above is equipped with the attendant in the basement. Cleanliness and hygiene are an essential part of the proper life of the Sangha. They are also crucial in “food-clothes-shelter” and in every aspect of the Sangha's daily life, including prevention of diseases and controlling one's diet. Cleanness and sanitation were required for the health, comfort, stability, and maintenance of order in Sangha life. To conclude, cleanness, sanitation, and housekeeping directly lead to the Iriyāpatha of a practice and are considered virtues in Sangha life. |
