| 摘要 | In the final pages of Politik als Beruf Max Weber introduces his famous distinction between two types of ethics: “Gesinnungsethik” and “Verantwortungsethik”. Neither of these terms is easy to translate and neither of them is simple to understand (Swedberg 2005: 89-91). Briefly, the first one is often rendered as the “ethics of conviction” and it is taken to mean that people act only according to principles and disregard any potential consequences. The second one is usually translated as the “ethics of responsibility” and is regarded as implying that people leave aside principles and act according to what they believe will be the likely consequences of those actions. It is evident to the attentive reader of Politik als Beruf that Weber has considerable respect for the adherents of both types of ethics; what is less clear is how he came to develop his account of these two types of ethics and why they are so crucially important to his thinking. Weber formulated the distinction between the two types of ethics towards the end of the war; thus his understanding of Germany’s fate contributes to developing this contrast. More importantly, he draws heavily on his own research regarding world religions. I begin by providing some context with some late nineteenth century discussions of “conscience”. Next, I examine Weber’s writings on the Protestant Ethic and specifically on the sections devoted to Calvin. Then I investigate Weber’s writings on the Old Testament prophets. In the final section I show how these three stands of theological beliefs helped Weber to formulate his two types of ethics. However, the prophets, the Reformers, and the Protestant theologians all based the legitimacy of their actions on their belief in God; Weber’s politician could not do that, nor should he have tried to do so. Weber argued instead that the true politician needed to base his decisions on the sense of responsibility and the accountability before the future. |
