Lankāvatāra-sūtra is widely recognized as a scripture that combines Yogācara thought with Tathāgata-garbha thought. The theory of daśa-bhūmi of the Lankāvatāra-sūtra which is the study of this article originated from the daśa-bhūmi theory of the Yogācara thought and united Tathāgata-garbha thought. Through analysis on the theory of daśa-bhūmi explained in Lankāvatāra-sūtra, this article suggests that the combination ultimately aims for Tathāgata- garbha thought. To explain this, this theory is classified into two process which are from the first stage to the seventh stage and from the eighth stage to the Buddha Stage. Also this theory corresponds to four meditations in Lankāvatāra-sūtra. That is, the bodhisattva masters Two non-self in the first stage and meditates observing reason that three-svabhava, five-dharma, eight-vijnana etc, all of these are Mind-only. Like śrāvaka or pratyekabuddha who practices first meditation, the bodhisattva entrances into the nirodha-samapatti in the sixth stage. But the bodhisattva who doesn’t stay there practices Nirvāṇa of Non-Abiding in the seventh Stage. Afterwards, he meditates tathatā staying acitta as the disappearance of conciousness in the eighth stage on the base of Yogācara thought. Furthermore the bodhisattva works for the unenlightened people by the manomaya-kāya on the base of the Tathāgata-garbha thought. As a result, the Bodhisattva accomplishes Nirvāṇa of Bodhisattva as the disappearance of consciousness in the eighth stage and fulfills Nirvāṇa of Tathāgata which all eight-vijñāna of sāsrava entirely vanishes in the Buddha Stage. This way, Lankāvatāra-sūtra asserts that in the Buddha Stage, all eight-vijñāna of sāsrava vanish but “ālaya-vijñāna called Tathāgata-garbha” of anāsrava never vanishes. In particular, the “ālaya-vijñāna called Tathāgata-garbha” is the anāsrava-citta of the Bodhisattva in the daśa-bhūmi. This “citta” is pratyātma-ārya-jñāna of the Bodhisattva or “āśraya” of Nirvāṇa and transmigration of Bodhisattva-icchantika. Finally the daśa-bhūmi theory of Lankāvatāra-sūtra can be considered ultimately to aims for Tathāgata-garbha thought on the base of Yogācara thought. |
