摘要
본 논문은 무주청화[無住淸華, 1923-2003]선사의 수행관의 핵심과 그 원류는 어디서 온 것이며, 또 선사가 표방한 수행의 관점 가운데 대표적인 ‘선오후수(先悟後修)’라는 명백한 주장의 내용은 무엇인지를 밝힌 데 있다. 아울러 지금까지 많은 논쟁이 있어왔던 ‘돈오(頓悟)’와 ‘점수(漸修)’를 보는 선사의 관점을 육조혜능[六祖慧能, 638-713]과 비교하여 중점적으로 천착하는 데 그 중심을 두었다. 법어집 전체를 관통하고 있는 선사의 사상과 수행관은 무엇보다 부처님을 종주로 하는 일원주의와 선과 교의 회통주의적 입장에 서있다. 또 그가 주장하는 ‘선오’란 우리가 다만 업장에 가려 모를 뿐 내 본바탕, 천지우주의 바탕은 실상묘유(實相妙有)요, 진공묘유(眞空妙有)임을 확실히 깨닫는 것이며, 설사 명백히 깨닫지 못하더라도 우선 개념적으로라도 명심하고 신해(信解)하라는 것이 그 핵심이다. 또 이런 깨달음이 선 뒤에 후수, 즉 닦음이라는 과정이 반드시 있어야 한다고 주장한다. 후수의 내용은 사가행(四加行)을 비롯해 간화선과 묵조선, 염불선 등 모든 수행에 고루 개방적 입장을 지녔다. 후수의 필요성을 역설한 그의 관점은 무엇보다 현대의 수행자들은 대체로 돈오점수의 근기에 속하므로 깨달음을 얻었다고 할지라도 다생의 습기를 녹여 제거하기 위한 과정이 반드시 있어야한다는 데 있다. 따라서 그가 생각하는 점수는 해오(解悟) 이후이든, 증오(證悟) 이후이든 동일하게 요구되는 필수적 수행과정이다. 다만 그가 생각하는 이 깨달음 이후의 점수는 그 성격이 ‘무념(無念)의 수(修)’, 즉 ‘무염오(無染汚)의 닦음’으로서 구경각, 즉 불지(佛地)에 이르기 위한 성자의 위치에서 닦는 수행이며, ‘무념의 수’라는 점에서 돈오돈수(頓悟頓修)와의 문제에 있어서도 하등 문제가 될 것이 없다는 것이 그의 뚜렷한 입장이다. 그러므로 전체적으로는 돈오점수의 입장에 서있지만, 그것조차도 상대가 어떤 사람인가에 따라 그 집착을 부수기 위해 지혜롭게 설해야 하는 것으로서 수행인의 집착의 성향에 따라 점수에 치우치는 자에게는 돈오돈수를, 본래 부처인데 닦을 것이 있겠는가라고 하는 자에게는 돈오점수를 역설해야 한다는 것이 그의 명백한 주장이다.
This paper discusses the concepts and performance of the venerable Muzu Cheongwha (無住淸華, 1923-2003). It also attempts to reveal his characteristic concept of “realizing Buddha’s teachings and then practicing them later (先悟後修)” among the aspects of performance he pursued. In addition, this paper focuses on his controversial view of “sudden enlightenment and gradual practicing (頓悟漸修)” compared to the ideas of Master Dajian Huineng (慧能大師; 638-713). The purpose of this paper is to harmonize Buddhist monotheism, Seon, Buddhist teachings with Muzu Cheongwha’s thoughts and practices. Hisconceptof“realizing the Buddha's teachings” implies that we do not know the truth because we are covered by karma . The foundation of one’s self and the universe is to realize the “true emptiness and marvelous being.” The key is to understand the concept first, even if we do not obviously realize it. After this realization, he argues that there must be a process called performance (修). The content of “practicing it later” includes all performances, including the Four Kuśalamūlas (四加行), such as Ganhwa Seon (看話禪), Silent-Penetrative Seon (默照禪), and Amitabha Recitation Seon (念佛禪). He emphasizes “to practice it later” even if they have been enlightened, modern performers generally have the character of “sudden enlightenment and gradual practicing,” so they must undergo a process of removing their habits. His idea of “gradual practicing” (漸修) involves performing without thinking after this realization. Thatistosay, a performer becomes a Buddha through “sudden enlightenment and sudden practicing (頓悟頓修).” Overall, “sudden enlightenment and sudden practicing” must be explained wisely according to a person's temperament. Muzu Cheongwha claims clearly that performers who correspond to “gradual practicing” should learn about “sudden enlightenment and sudden practicing,” while “sudden enlightenment and gradual practicing” should be explained to those who think that they have nothing to perform because we are originally Buddha.
