With the ongoing discussions and prospects for the fourth industrial revolution, discussions and concerns about de-laborization and de-religionization co-exist. A new understanding of religion and labor in such changes is inevitable. The current paper seeks to address this on the basis of precedents in which Buddhist Zen centers and Christian monasteries have coexisted organically with labor, amid the changes of times. Zen Buddhism, an independent order formed by Baekjang (百丈), established a code of conduct, Cheonggyu (淸規). Labor in Zen Buddhism was made into an important rule of practice by Baekjang. In Zen Buddhism, production labor prohibited by Vinaya has a status equivalent to Zen practice beyond self-sufficiency. This was partly due to the social pressure on labor at that time; in other words, it was an expansion of the horizon for Zen and the truth of Zen came into everyday life. Meanwhile, the Christian monastery began with desert hermits who were trying to reflect on the secularization of the church and follow the martyrdom spirit. In the early monastic rules, labor was valued in parallel with the strict observance and an extension of prayer, which was a religious foundation. It was an honorable means of self-reliance and the mission of creation granted to God. This spirit of monastery labor was established by Benedict as a rule and passed down to Western Christianity. Both Zen centers and monasteries sublimated labor, which was initially accepted as a means of livelihood, into an ordinary and practical way of religious essence and followers actually realized it in their ordinary lives. This is where religion and everyday life meet and where labor was realized beyond the concept of traditional labor. |
