摘要
본고는 영허 해일의 <두류산>을 번역하고, 문장의 구성을 파악하여 내용에 함축된 의미를 고찰한 것이다. 여기에서 주목한 점은 사찰명, 지명, 봉우리명 등을 사용하여 문장을 구성하고 두 가지 이상의 뜻을 함축하여 담아내었다는 것이다. 작품은 지명이나 사찰명을 활용하여 지리산의 위치나 가치를 표현하고, 인명이나 사찰명을 사용하여 구전설화나 역사적 인물의 자취, 그리고 선불교의 전래나 불교의 사상 등을 기록하였다. 산의 위치나 가치를 서술함에 있어서 여러 지명과 사찰명을 사용한 것이 아니라, 한 두 명칭만 이끌어서 의미를 표현하였다. 산의 형상과 물줄기의 흐름을 묘사함에 있어서도 한 두가지 명칭을 사용하는 간결함으로 의미를 전달하였다. 또 선불교의 전래나 불교의 사상을 표현함에 있어서도 인명과 관련 사찰명만을 선택해서 내용을 구성하였다. 작품에 기록된 개별 명칭인 지명, 사찰명, 봉우리명 등의 배치가 언뜻 보기에는 일반단어들을 나열해 놓은 듯하였다. 그래서 <두류산>에 기록된 사찰명과 지명 등의 존재 여부를 다른 지리산 유산기록에서 찾아 확인하였다. 그 결과 개별 명칭들이 그 뜻을 상징하고 있음을 파악하였다. <두류산>에 나타난 단어들은 사찰명이나 지명 등을 나타내면서 의도한 내용을 효과적으로 전달하기 위한 방식으로 배치하여 구성하였다. 그 명칭들이 앞뒤 문장에서 댓구를 이루기도하고, 의미를 전달함에 있어서 뒷 문장이 앞 문장의 내용을 잇기도 하였다. 이러한 분석은 두 세가지의 개별 명칭으로 문장을 구성하고 배치하는 간명함으로 의도한 내용을 나타내고 있음을 밝힌 것이다. 그리하여 작품에 나열된 개별 명칭의 배치가 사찰명과 지명 등을 활용하여 불교사상과 관련 설화, 그리고 깨달음의 경지 등을 함축한 중의적 서술임을 추정하였다.
This study translated by Yeongheo Haeil and examined the implied meaning by understanding sentence structures. One thing to note is that the sentences were composed by using temple names, place names, and so on like ordinary words and included two or three meanings at once. The work expressed location or value of the Jirisan Mountain by using either place name or temple name and recorded folktales, vestiges of historical figures, introduction of Seon Buddhism, and Buddhist ideology by using names of people or temple names. When it came to describing location or value of mountain, it did not use several place names or temple names but expressed meaning based on one or two names. Also, when it came to describing shape of mountain or flow of water, conveyed meaning by briefly using one or two names. In addition, it organized contents after selecting names of people and relevant temple names when it came to expressing introduction of Seon Buddhism or Buddhist ideology. The arrangement of place names and temple names seemed enumeration of ordinary words. In that sense, the names in have been identified from other Jiri Mountain heritage records. As a result, it has been found that individual names represented such meanings. The words in refer to temple names or place names and it had been organized in the style of effectively conveying intended contents. The names comprise rhyming couplet at the beginning and the end of a sentence and latter sentence was connected to former sentence when it came to meaning delivery. Such an analysis identified that intended contents have been expressed based on conciseness of organizing and arranging sentences with two or three individual names. Thus, it has been identified that the arrangement of individual names based on temple names and place names was ambiguous description implying tales and enlightenment stage related to Buddhist ideology.
