This article reviews the point where distress occurs and the possibility of its solution, focusing on “feeling” (vedanā). Unlike other mind elements in khandha, ‘feeling’ is the realm that literally ‘feels’ pain. Early Buddhist texts have mentioned that when objects connect with sensory organs, feelings of pleasure, distress, and others arise. They suggest that these feelings occur in the physical and mental realms. The types of distress in Buddhism, seen through MahāsatipaΛΛhānasutta, include aging, sickness, and death, followed by a decrease in life span, senility, and dissolution of khandha, along with grief (soka), lamentation (parideva), physical pain (dukkha), and mental suffering (domanassa). The types of distress seen in psychology include physical pain, mental suffering, and negative affect; these are similar to Buddhist classifications. Early Buddhist texts explain distress as the processes by which feelings arise due to the contact (phassa) of sensory organs, objects, and consciousness, and taΧhā occurs with “feeling” as a condition. The Buddhist texts state that if feeling does not exist, taΧhā also does not exist, stating that taΧhā is the cause of suffering and feeling is the key to making taΧhā. Psychologically, distress is increased or decreased by a down-regulating mechanism where pain signals transmitted from peripheral tissues to the central nervous system descend from the central nervous system; these processes are believed to be operated by “psychological factors.” The findings suggest that the correlation between feeling and pain is extremely close, in that the brain regions involved in emotional responses, such as the prefrontal lobe and the anterior cingulate, also affect the transmission of pain, and vedanā makes sense of distress. Further, the mindfulness (sati) of vedanānupassanā shows the possibility of controlling the feeling by activating non-automatic reactions of the distress it automatically senses. |
