This writing considers the aesthetics of Wontonggungdyeontapdo (pagoda iconography) and its symbols displayed in Hwagyesa Temple. In the late 19th century, Wontonggungdyeontapdo were created by the Buddhists practicing their teaching at Myoryeonsa Temple. They practiced reciting the name of Avalokiteśvara (the Bodhisattva Gwaneum), and in response to their devotion, Avalokiteśvara received and shared the teachings, which led to the compilation of “Jejunggamro” and the creation of woodblocks featuring the pagoda iconography. The main content of “Jejunggamro,” composed of ten divisions, is to liberate sentient beings with the divine power of Avalokiteśvara, which is characterized by self-awareness, the practice of compassion, the convergence between the concept of divine response and that which arises from Buddha’s nature, the convergence of a variety of sectarian ideas, and the practicality of salvation for all sentient beings. As for the symbolic aesthetics of Wontonggungdyeontapdo, Buddhist thought is visually presented in the shape and form of pagoda iconography. Firstly, the stone roof and the body of the pagoda represent the saint in the upper portion and sentient beings in the lower, respectively. “Om” and “Ram” are displayed at the pagoda’s apex with the prayer of sentient beings below. Both the left and right of its exterior are decorated with celestial dragons. Secondly, in the center, the first letter “cheon” and the final letter “Hum” in the Bohoehyang mantra convey the beauty of symmetry. In addition, the celestial dragons at the left and the right provide protection and empower the Buddhist worshipers to practice good deeds. The penitence of the sentient beings and the mercy of Avalokiteśvara displayed at the bottom represent the symmetry of Buddha’s two legs. It can be said that the woodblock of Wontonggungdyeontap, carved with the characters of Hangeul, was created to be used as a token of devotion and death enshrined by the public and prayed for by chanting the holy name of Avalokiteśvara. |
