Naewonam is a hermitage of Donghwasa Temple located in Palgongsan Mountain in Daegu City, Republic of Korea. In 1958 when the hermitage underwent a renovation, a wooden Bodhisattva statue was transferred from a ruined temple nearby and enshrined in Naewonam Hermitage. The Wooden Seated Bodhisattva of Naewonam Hermitage wears a tall, splendid crown and seats in confident posture with facial expressions conveying solemn mood. With a robe draped over its shoulder, the Bodhisattva wears a skirt covering from its chest to the lower body with long laces and edge of the skirt. The way the Bodhisattva is dressed succeeds the modality of Buddhist statues from the early Joseon Dynasty. Few statues from the late Joseon Dynasty shows such features. The detailed and subtle expressions of the statue including the shape of the face, hands, and ears, body ratio and facial expressions are similar with the Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Simwoosa Temple located in Geochang County, Korea carved by a monk scultor Cheongheo in 1640. Such similarity gives us good grounds to belive that the Bodhisattva of Naewonam was created by the same monk sculptor. As a member of the Won - o Circle, Cheongheo worked and trained with other monk sculptors from the same circle including Wono, Gakmin and Hengsa in Jeolla-do and Chungcheong-do Province of Korea. Starting with collaboration with Hyunjin, a celebrated monk sculptor of the 1610’s from Gyeongsang - do Province, Chengheo worked with other monk sculptors from Hyunjin Circle such as Beophyeon and Hyeonyun to create the Bodhisattva Statue of Naewonam and Amitabha of Simwoosa Temple. It is estimated that Cheongheo continued his artistic career in Gyeongsang - do Province around 1640 when the statues were made. Given that no major artistic activity by Wono Circle except for those by Cheongheo has been identified since the 1610’s, relocation of Cheongheo might be linked with the decline of Won - o Circle supposedly caused by the death of Wono, his master, and retirement of senior monk sculptors. The Bodhisattva of Naewonam Hermitage made in Gyeongsang - do Province, one of Cheongheo’s earliest works demonstrates signature traits of Buddhist statues of the early 17th century as well as splendid yet subtle expressions of the earlier times. As such, the Bodhisattva of Naewonam Hermitage holds great significance as the statue embraces Cheongheo’s profound understanding on Buddhist statues and considerable potential as a sculptor. |
