摘要
원허[圓虛 曉璇, 1889~1966]는 금강산을 중심으로 활동했으며 한국전쟁이후 조계종 출범에 기여한 인물 중의 한 분이다. 그는 표훈사 도량을 일신했으며 포교활동에 매진했고 또한 남한에서는 불교계 정화에 적극적으로 참여한 인물이다. 불교 현대사의 중요 인물임에도 조명하지 못한 것은 그의 금강산 활동의 거점이사라졌기 때문이며, 전쟁 후 남한에서의 기반 구축이 어려웠던 점이 있었다. 그는 경기도 안성 출신이며 표훈사 관허[貫虛天日]를 스승으로 출가하였다. 1910년 일제강점기로부터 해방공간에 이르기까지 표훈사와 그 소속 말사의 경영, 그리고 잡지 발행과 금강산불교회 구성, 포교서적의 보급, 불교학 연구지원 등의불사들을 단행하였다. 월남하여 그는 이승만과 교분을 구축했으며 또한 불교계정화에 적극적으로 참여했고 강원도의 주요 사찰들을 정화했다. 원허의 생애자료는 『불교시보』의 내용 그리고 제자인 최준섭과 인환(印幻)의구술 그리고 불교정화와 관련한 자료들과 언론보도이다. 필자는 호암 채인환의제자로서 그의 생애사 구술을 정리하는 과정에서 원허의 존재를 알게 되었다. 인환은 자신의 스승이 활동했던 업적에 대한 연구를 필자에게 부촉하였다. 멸실될 수도 있었던 원허의 업적들을 본 연구조사에 의하여 다수 발굴되었고 그의연고지들도 답사하고 확인하였다. 전쟁후 동산, 효봉, 금오 등과 함께 현 조계종을 출범시킨 원허의 생애와 활동기록은 불교사의 중요 자료이다.
Choi Won - he is a Buddhist monk of Pyo Hoon-sa temple located in Mount Geumgang, Korean Peninsula. He repaired many temples belonging to Pyo-hoon Temple. And He concentrated on buddhist missionary work there. Before the Korean War(1950~1953), he crossed the border from North Korea to South Korea. He is one of the leading figures in the launch of the Buddhist Jogye Order in Korea. His hometown is Bangchuk-ri, Yangseong - myeon, Anseong-gun, Gyeonggi Province. He became a Buddhist monk at Mt. Geumgang at the age of 19. His teacher is Ven. Jeon Gwan - he of Pyo Hoon-sa. In 1910, to liberation from Japanese occupation, he published a magazine ‘Geumgangsan’ and organized the ‘Geumgangsan Buddhist Society’, distributed missionary books, etc. carried out a Buddhist project. Wonhe came to the South in 1949 and established a special friendship with President Rhee Seung-man. With that connection, Rhee supported Buddhist purification in south korea. And Wonhe purified many temples in Gangwon - do. The activity data for Choi Won-he is as follows. There are magazines such as 『BulgyoSibo』, 『Bulgyo』, 『Seonwon』 and 『Geumgangsan』 and 『Yujumsa Bonmalsazi』. And there is a recording of the students' oral history, They are Choi Joon-sup(Inhae, 1939~) and Inhwan(1931~2018). And there are materials related to Buddhist purification and press reports. I graduated from Dongguk University, and I am a student of Inhwan. I know Wonhe, which is in the process of organizing the life history of In - Hwan. Right before his death, In - hwan asked me to study the work of Wen-he. Although Wonhe's achievements could have disappeared, many of them were unearthed through this research. The activities of Wonhe, who launched the Korean Jogye Order with Dongsan, Hyobong and Geumoh after the war, are very important.
