The Ox-Herding Pictures (十牛圖) is a symbol that visualizes the process of Chan (禪) meditation. The paintings are usually composed of 10 pieces, of which the entering the marketplace with hang one’s hands down (入廛垂手) was taken to imply completion of meditation practice. It is not clear, however, whether it is an indispensable element for the perfection of Chan meditation practice or a moral order or mission following it. Nevertheless, it has been strongly implied in the context of transcendence-salvation, and has been read from the viewpoint of sincere behavior after the enlightenment. In the Southern Song Dynasty (南宋, 127—1279), after the Kuò ān (廓庵) emphasized he Entering the marketplace with hang one’s hands down, the Ox-herding pictures was accepted in the context of the enlightened person entering the marketplace and saving the world. But it can also be transcendent or superior consciousness based on intense self-consciousness. To read the Ox-herding pictures in the context of transcendence-salvation is to emphasize only a specific part of the perfection stage of the performance shown by the Ox-herding pictures. In many other types of Ox-herding pictures, there is considerably more deconstructive gaze than the savior's gaze. Here, the subject and the object are deconstructed, and it is clear that the condition that the enlightened person and the world do not exist is the completion of the performance. Only when such a deconstructive self is completed, it can be accompanied by a socially participatory attitude symbolized by the entering the marketplace with hang one’s hands down. |
