Seokjeon(石顚) cannot be said to have left a lot of Chinese poems. But his poetry, which was created in the period of going through the modern period from the end of Joseon period, has no deficiency even if being said to become a precious channel that watches for social activity, an insight into Seonri, and inner consciousness. Writing Chinese poetry had been general until the period of Seokjeon(石顚). As for him as a person who was born at the end of Joseon dynasty and then studied at Seodang(書堂, a village school), the traditional Chinese poetry seems to have been easier than the modern poetry in unveiling the inner side and the reason. However, Seokjeon's poetic awareness comes to be followed by a change along with entering the Buddhist priesthood. He emphasized that poetry and Zen meditation are not different at all. Unlike the poems by Confucian literary persons, the indications were formed the mainstream as saying that Seokjeon's Chinese poems are possessed a big weight by the poetic embodiment on the reason of Zen and on the delicate enlightenment. Still, this fixed Seokjeon to a Buddhist monk, thereby needing to be examined whether or not being the preconceived evaluation of having been made. That is because the travel poems of holding a large part in his poetry at least mostly include a thought about figure, ruins, custom, and Buddhism of having been captured with hanging loose in mountains and streams escaping from a Buddhist monk's dwelling. As for a traveler who wanders everywhere with coming out of a Buddhist temple in the mountains, the views outside change into a catalyst of drawing poetic excitement. The land pilgrimage allows Seokjeon to open a sight available for expanding or newly seeing a range of recognition across national land, history and Buddhism. His poetry leads to fully revealing that the national land is just a stage of making it enjoy the sense of freedom along with the introspection into an object. Even while proceeding with walking on the territory that was occupied by the Japanese Empire, a heavy heart is not found at least in poetry. Thus, the lack of the contemporary character may be criticized. But he believes perpetuality that it has with showing the perception as saying that the national land is what is situated in eternity. Rather than flatly testifying to the grim reality that the nation faced, he is eliciting a proposition called national introspection and Buddhist awareness with a method of carefully stirring up the forgotten history, figure, tale and Buddha's mercy. |
