본 연구는 1930년대 불교신앙체험담의 서사적 특징과 의의를 체험과 소통의 측면에서 규명하고, 그 출현 배경을 탐색한 것이다. 연구 대상은 ≪불교시보≫에 수록된 23편의 불교신앙체험실화다. 우선 자기체험 서사로서 불교신앙체험담은 밀착적 서술, 진솔한 심정 묘사, 고백적 발화 등의 서술적 특징을 갖는다. 그 효과는 영험사적의 사실성 강화다. 또한 불교신앙체험담은 체험, 기억, 서술 간의 역동적 관계로 의미가 구축되는 체험담 일반의 성격으로 인해 서술적 의도가 강하게 개입된다는 특징이 있다. 이러한 두 가지 측면에서 불교신앙체험담은 독자를 설득하고 변화시키는 데 효과적인 담화 유형이라고 할 수 있다. 이상과 같은 서사적 특징을 갖고 있는 불교신앙체험담은 소통과 공감을 기반으로 개인의 영적 체험 및 변화를 강조한다는 의의가 있다. 이런 점에서 불교신앙체험담은 신앙공동체의 일원으로서 수평적 관계 맺기를 통하여 공감대 형성이라는, 효과를 창출한다고 할 수 있다. 다음으로 불교신앙체험담은 일반 여성들의 체험담이라는 점에서 남성적이며 규범적인 불교서사담론의 영역을 확장했다는 의의가 있다. 특히, 여성 특유의 경험이 투영되어 있다는 점에서 불교신앙체험담은 여성적 글쓰기의 근대적 한 양상으로 주목된다. 마지막으로 불교신앙체험담은 신앙심의 효과적인 개발 방식이라는 측면에서 심전개발운동의 일환으로 출현한 것이라 할 수 있다. 또한 불교에서 이들 이야기를 통해 신앙고백을 새로운 포교 방식으로 활용한 데는 당시 경쟁 관계에 있던 기독교 치병 간증의 영향도 있었을 것이다.
I examined the narrative characteristic and significance of the stories of spiritual experiences in Buddhism at modern times in the aspects of experiences and communications, and searched their backgrounds of appearance in this essay. First, the stories of spiritual experiences in Buddhism have the narrative characteristic of in-depth description, honest internal portrait, confession expression. In addition, they have characteristics which of the meaning is constructed by the dynamic relationship between experiences, memories, and narration. In this respect, the stories of spiritual experiences in Buddhism are the type of discourses which are effective deterrent for the persuasion of reader. Considering these narrative characteristics of them, the stories of spiritual experiences in Buddhism have the significance that it emphasizes the individual incorporate experiences and transformation based on communication and sympathy. In this respect, they launch the horizontal relationship-making. Next, the stories of spiritual experiences in Buddhism have the significance that they broadened the masculine and normative scope of Narrative discourse in Buddhism. Especially the stories are noteworthy as the aspect of modernism of female narrative. Lastly, I searched the background of appearance of the stories of spiritual experiences in Buddhism in Mental enlightenment movement and the curing testimony of Christianity in this essay.
