摘要
본고는 김동리 역사소설의 사상적 배경에 관한 고찰이다. 1950년대 중반부터 1960년대 전반까지 김동리는 단편 역사소설 창작에 집중한다. 후일 이 시기에 창작한 단편 역사소설 16편을 모아 상재한 작품집이 <김동리 역사소설>(지소림, 1977)이다. 본고는 이 16편과 함께 해당 시기에 함께 창작된 중편 역사소설 <阿尸良記(아리랑기)-一名阿尸良國興亡記>를 연구대상으로 삼고 있다. '신라연작'으로 불리는 이들 연구 대상은 그 배경이 모두 고대 신라라는 점뿐만 아니라 종교적 탐색이 주요한 주제의식의 하나라는 점에서도 공통된다. 이에 본고는 오랜 기간 김동리의 창작 화두였던 '생의 구경적 형식'에 관한 탐구가 불교적 세계를 배경으로 삼과 있는 이들 작품에서 어떻게 피력되고 있는지에 주목하였다. 김동리가 이해한 고대 신라의 불교는 무교와의 융합 혹은 습합을 통해 이른바 '신불(神佛)'신앙으로 거듭난 종교였다. 그리고 이러한 신불신앙이 화랑도의 사상적 토대였다는 것이 김동리가 '신라연작'을 통해 증명하고자 하는 바다. 김동리는 이 '신라연작'에서 단편 역사소설의 제약 혹은 특성을 십분 활용해 주요한 역사적 인물들의 정신세계를 서사적으로 재현하는 데 나름 성공하고 있다. 역사소설인 만큼 사료적 전거에 충실하고자 노력한바 적지 않으며, 이를 효과적으로 구현하기 위해 액자식 구성을 과감히 도입하기도 한다. 뿐만 아니라 이들 실존인물과 다양한 허구적 인물들이 엮어내는 연애담을 통해 흥미의 요소 또한 놓치지 않고 있다. 이 같은 논점들을 중심으로 본 연구가 수행된 결과 불교 관련 김동리 소설문학을 좀 더 균형 잡힌 시각에서 이해하고 평가할 수 있는 근거가 마련될 수 있을 것이다.
This study is a consideration on ideological foundations of DONG-REE KIM's historical fictions. From mid-1950s to the first half of 1960s DONG-REE KIM had concentrated on writing historical short stories. In 1977, he published "DONG-REE KIM's Historical Fiction" with 16 pieces written at this time. The object of this study is 16 pieces including historical fiction novella 'ARIRANGGI' which was written around the same time with them. These works have something in common that their main theme is set in a religious quest and romantic background is all ancient Shilla Kingdom. Thus this study pays close attention to aspects on which DONG-REE KIM's idea of Buddhism is expressed in them. Ancient Shilla Kingdom's Buddhism to him is 'Sinbul'(Gods and Buddhas) which is the fusion of shamanism as a folk religion and Buddhism. Through a Series of Silla Texts he intended to prove a fact that this 'Sinbul' was ideological foundation of the 'Hwarangdo'. Man of them are faithful to historical authority and are taken to narrative of frame. Besides they arouse readers' interest through love story. When this full-scale research 'a series of Silla texts' is performed, we can understand and assess DONG-REE KIM's Buddhism relevant literature in a more balanced literature basis.
