Buddhist chants is a rare historical material that exhibits the uniqueness of courtly culture in Early Joseon, complexly mixed with the continued tradition of Buddhist culture from the Goryeo Dynasty and Confucian culture. Buddhist chants is a meaningful subject of research, because Buddhist chants was performed as performance of Early Joseon and sung about song of blessing while preserving the traditional Buddhist culture of the Goryeo Dynasty. Buddhist chants is unique in that it complexly shows both the contemporary characteristic of the early Joseon period and the tradition of Buddhist culture from the Goryeo society. Despite its uniqueness, Buddhist chants has been studied only for its present aspects and properties of Akjang based on stylistic classification. The exhibition of traditional Buddhist culture in its lyrics or its origin in relation to performance culture have not been considered yet. The time of creation of This study reveals that the existence and time of creation of Buddhist chants is comparatively clear according to references. Buddhist chants was mainly created in the early Joseon period, under King Sejong and King Sejo. The content of Buddhist chants has two distinct features. Firstly, they all call for Buddha, that is they are in the form of ‘the repetition of the sacred name of Buddha’. This shows that Buddhist chants was dedicated to Buddha as voice services and passed down according to the Sutras. Secondly, Buddhist chants prays for permanent dynasty and long life of kings in accordance with Buddhist saints’ practice of good deeds. This is unusual in that it displays both Buddhism and the Confucian concept of sovereign and subject. The fact that Buddhist chants was actively used as music of solace for the king shows that even in the palace Buddhism functioned as religious consolation alternative to Confucianism. Furthermore, the second half of the performance of Cheo-yong reappears in the lyrics of Buddhist chants, showing that performance of Cheo-yong and Song of Cheo-yong were handed down in a deep relation to continued Buddhist culture of the Goryeo dynasty. Particularly, guna(驅儺), originating from the early Buddhism forms the basis of Buddhist culture, suggests that guna performed as exorcism before performance of Cheo-yong actually derived from the practice of culture in Buddhism.『荊楚歲時記』(a glossary of seasonal words as HYUNGCHO) is an evidence.
