| 摘要 | 만해 한용운은 참으로 다채로운 삶의 이력을 가진 인물이다. 그 동안 불교 개혁가, 항일 독립투사 그리고 문학가로서 한용운의 업적에 주목한 연구는 많이 시도되어 왔다. 하지만 순수한 종교인으로서 한용운의 면모와 종교 사상에 대한 심층적 연구는 아직 미비한 수준이다. 필자는 이 논문에서 선행 연구들을 토대로 연구의 편향성을 극복하기 위한 단초로서 불교인 즉 종교인으로서 한용운의 면모에 대한 종교학적 접근을 시도하였다. 우선 종교의 구성 요인을 크게 종교 체험적인 영역과 종교 사상 그리고 실천론으로서 종교 행위로 범주를 나누어 한용운의 다양한 행적에 대한 종교학적 의미를 고찰하였다. 선사(禪師)로서 한용운은 불교의 정수라 할 수 있는 오도(悟道)를 경험하게 된다. 그는 내적 체험을 바탕으로 당면한 시대적 사명을 감당하기 위해 사회화 과정으로서 항일 독립운동 및 불교개혁 운동을 전개하였다. 종교 체험이라는 극적인 사건이 단순히 내적 경험으로만 머물지 않고, 외부 세계로 그 힘을 발현한 것이다. 한용운이 당시 다른 운동가들과 달리 끝까지 일제에 타협하지 않고, 비폭력 투쟁을 고수하며 자신의 신념을 지킨 점은 종교인으로서 순교자적 일면을 엿볼 수 있게 한다. 한용운은 자신의 내적 깨달음을 바탕으로 식민지라는 암울한 상황 속에서 글쓰기와 항일‧독립운동 및 불교개혁 운동을 전개하며 혁명을 꿈꾸었다. 종교 체험과 종교 사상은 한용운이 펼친 다양한 행적들의 근원적 추동력이라 할 수 있다. 그는 수행의 내적 체험을 다양한 문자 활동으로 표상하였고, 나아가 시대 상황에 부합한 일련의 실천 운동을 전개하였다. 즉 내적으로는 불교 개혁 운동으로, 외적으로는 항일‧독립운동 등 당대 사회 문제에 적극 참여함으로써 자신의 종교 경험에 기반 한 사상을 세상 속에 구현하기 위해 노력한 종교인이자 불교 수행자였다. 종교 체험을 근간으로 한 종교 연구는 인간의 종교적 심성을 이해하는 하나의 실마리를 제공하여 보다 입체적인 인간 이해의 장을 열어준다. 그러므로 한용운의 종교 체험에 대한 진지한 성찰은 선사로서의 한용운과 깨달음의 외적 발현으로서 한용운의 행적에 대한 해석의 폭을 넓혀 줄 것이다. Manhae Han Yong-Un is a figure with various histories in his life. There are many researches on Han Yong-Un's achievements as a Buddhistic reformer, a fighter for national independence and a literary man. But there are few in-depth researches into his religious thought and aspects as a pure religious person. In oder to overcome such a biased tendency of researches, in this paper I tried to study comparative religiously on aspects of Han Yong-Un as a Buddhist, this is, as a religious person. For this purpose, I divided religious elements into three parts, that is, religious experience, religious thought and religious practice. And then I examined religious meanings of Han Yong-Un's various achievements on those three aspects. Han Yong-Un as a Sŏn master had a experience of enlightenment that is the essence of Buddhism. On the basis of this internal experience he tried to carry out a mission of the times and developed an independence movement against Japanese Empire and a Buddhistic reform movement as a realizations process of his mission for the society. We can get a glimpse of his martyrdom as a religious person, when he persisted in his belief and the non-violent movement without compromising with the Japanese Empire unlike many other people in those days. All these dramatic events shows that his religious experience is not kept indoors but reveals its power outside. On the basis of inner enlightenment Han Yong-Un dreamed of a revolution in gloomy circumstances of the colonial period through writing, an independence movement and a Buddhistic reform movement. The religious experience and religious thought of Han Yong-Un as a religious person made consequentially a driving force of his various achievements. He represented his internal experience of ascetic practices as various writings. Further he developed a series of practical movements which the times required. He was a religious person and man of Buddhistic practice who tried to realize his thought on the basis of religious experience in the world by solving social problems of his times . Religious studies on the basis of religious experience provide a clue to understand the religious nature of human beings and opened a new field for the stereoscopic understanding of human. Thus a serious reflection on religious experience of Han Yong-Un will broaden the scope of interpretation on him as a sŏn master and on his achievements which is an external manifestation of his enlightenment. |
