| 摘要 | This study not only presents an overview of nursing schools established by Buddhist sects in modern times based on the history of modern medical care and nursing, but also highlights their problems taking into consideration the circumstances of the Buddhist sects. Although significant research has been conducted up to now on the history of nursing and on modern nursing schools, very little attention has been paid to the Buddhist perspective. Repeated infectious disease epidemics and large-scale disasters have plagued Japan since the country’s opening at the end of the Edo period right through the Taisho era following the Meiji period. They have not only changed the direction of modern medical systems from the traditional ones, but also separated Buddhism—established traditional medical field—from medical care. Under such circumstances, women’s occupational nursing, which spread to Japan from the Christian cultural sphere in the 1880s, flourished not only in the field of modern medical care but also in homes and religious institutes due to the background of its introduction. As a profession with a specific nature, several nurse training centers were opened between 1890 and 1910 by the sects of Pure Land Buddhism. These institutions were established not only to compete with Christian nursing schools but also as measures against infectious diseases and to ensure relief in the event of natural disasters, which were widespread at the time. However, they did not last long, as there was neither any framework for care activities by female Buddhists that could serve as the basis for occupational nursing nor any religious models. Therefore, nursing training in modern Japan has never been easy. However, even under such circumstances, it was documented that there were Buddhists who pursued occupational nursing. In order to address the problems mentioned in this paper we need to understand the Buddhist concept of nursing by following in the footsteps of its pioneers. |
