| 摘要 | Onatsu Sosei Monogatari (Resurrection of Onatsu) is a kange bon (indoctrination book) of Jōdo-Shinshū, written in the middle of the Edo period. Onatsu became a faithful follower after being taught by a monk. Afterward, she died and paid a brief visit to the Pure Land. The day following her death she came back to life and spoke about what she had seen in the Pure Land. Today there are two editions of this story: one in the style of printed matter, another in manuscript form. There are some differences in content between two editions. This study was carried out to clarify the sources and references of the story. Contrary to a previous study, today there is some evidence that the Kanagaki Eiri Ōjō Yōshū and Kōkan Meishōroku, another indoctrination book of Jōdo-shū, influenced the description of the Pure Land in the Onatsu story. The original story may have been written by a monk who preached to ordinary people. The manuscript seems to be antecedent to the printed edition. In the manuscript, the Pure Land is described as a utopia without suffering and anxiety, or in other words, a place very different from the real world and unimaginable for the people of that period. So, it is quite reasonable to conclude that this story about Onatsu was created for the sake of indoctrination, and to persuade people to believe in the Pure Land. This study thus offers some insight into the religious aspects and views of afterlife at the time. |
