| 摘要 | When did the word “happiness (幸福: kōfuku)” first appear in Japan and when did it come to be used in the modern sense? To answer this question, I envision an intellectual history of the Japanese “happiness” discourse. In this study, as the first step, I have provided an overview of the history of the word “happiness” in Japanese. This attempt positions the “happiness” that prevails in modern times within history. The word “happiness” is a concept that has been popular as a translated word since the Meiji era. The Japanese words shiawase (しあはせ) and saiwai (さひはひ) in the pre-modern period meant “luck,” “events that happen by chance,” or “things that are bestowed by God as good luck,” which differs conceptually from the modern concept of happiness. The translated word “happiness (幸福: kōfuku)” is a concept that was introduced in Japan by the Enlightenment thinkers in the early Meiji era along with the concept of human rights. They also introduced the words “individual” and “society,” concepts that did not exist in pre-modern Japan. Works such as Western Affairs (written by Yukichi Fukuzawa and published in 1866), Self Help (translated by Masanao Nakamura and published in1970), The Elements of Moral Science (translated by Taizō Abe and published in1974), led to the proliferation of the word “happiness.” However, this word was not simply imported from Western thought but was remade in the translation process and accepted as an image of “happiness” that was backed by the national ideals of the Meiji era. |
