Early Joseon Dynasty’s poetry has been interpreted mainly from Confucian and Taoist perspectives to date. However, among the literary works on detachedness, sijo of Prince Wolsan stands out due to its Buddhistic nature. Since detachedness, the central topic of the literature from the late Koryo dynasty to the early Joseon dynasty, represents the essence of the East Asian aesthetics, this study investigates how detachedness was related to the Buddhistic trend and its cultural correlation with the siga literature. Wolsan’s sijo was influenced by the poems of the Buddhist monk Yabo who annotated the Diamond Sutra; in order to prove so, Wolsan’s sijo and Yabo’s poems that appears in the annotation of the Diamond Sutra are compared. Other than their likeness, a couple of evidences are presented, such as the affinity between Wolsan’s life and Buddhism and the lasting connection between detachedness and the Buddhist traditions (that is Buddhist monk Kyunghan's detachedness idea) from the late Koryo dynasty to the early Joseon dynasty period based on the Diamond Sutra. Wolsan’s sijo is known for their lyrical excellence, but they should in fact be appraised for its Buddhistic philosophy in the era of Confucianism. From the meaning of detachedness, it is possible to identify that Wolsan’s works flawlessly turned Yabo’s Song from the Diamond Sutra into a sijo, maintaining distance from the other works that idealize living within nature. The value of Wolsan’s sijo in the literary history should be estimated for its rejection of the Confucian idealism and pursuit of the Buddhist. It will suggest a new paradigm for the relational interpretation of the early Joseon literature. |
