| 摘要 | 1966년 대만 화련에서 창립된 자제공덕회는 대만에서 규모가 가장 큰 민간 자선기구이다. 창립 이후 40여년이 지난 지금 자제공덕회는 전 세계 33개 국가에 150여개에 달하는 지부를 거느리고 있으며 500만명에 달하는 회원과 자원봉사자들로 이루어진 국제적인 불교구호단체로 성장하였다. 자제공덕회는 중국근대불교에서 인간불교의 이념을 주창한 태허스님의 맥을 이은 인순스님의 사상을 이어받은 증엄스님에 의해 창립되었다. 자제공덕회의 지난 40년 동안 자선, 의료, 교육, 인문(문화)의 4가지 커다란 사업(四大志業)을 '자비희사(慈悲喜捨)'의 사무량심에 의거하여 전개하고 있다. 자비희사는 자제공덕회가 사회적으로 실천하는 보살도의 기본정신이며 이 4대 사업에 다시 국제구 호, 골수기증, 사회봉사, 환경보호(國際賑災, 骨髓捐贈, 社區志工, 環保)의 4가지를 더한 팔대각보(八大腳步)를 펼쳐 감으로써 전 세계에 자제가 지향하는 인간과 대애(大愛)라는 큰 자비를 펼치고 있다. 자비희사의 사무량심을 실천하는 자제인들은 성정신실(誠正信實)을 삶의 원칙(處世原則)으로 삼고 있는데 성(誠)은 사람을 대함에 마음 깊은 곳으로부터 우러나오는 정성을 다하는 것이고, 정(正)은 일을 처리할 때 공정하게 하는 것을 의미하며, 신(信)은 모든 일을 대할 때 흔들림 없는 믿음으로써 할 것과 실(實)은 언제나 참다운 사람이 될 것을 말하는 것이다. 이들은 이와 같은 활동을 통해 부유한 사람들에게는 이롭게 사는 법을 가르치고, 가난한 이들을 도와 고통에서 구제하는 ‘제빈교부(濟貧敎富)’의 활동을 통해 삶의 진정한 의미를 찾게 하는 한편 사회적 각성을 이룰 수 있도록 한다. 자제공덕회가 진행한 이와 같은 자비행은 사람의 삶을 변화시키고, 생활을 변화시키는 힘, 즉 교화력을 확보하였고 그 근원에는 지도자의 도덕성과 솔선수범이 자리 잡고 있다. 자제공덕회는 우리에게 교학적 근거에 의거해서 새로운 불교의 지향을 찾아야 한다는 것과 도덕성과 솔선수범에서 발휘되는 지도자의 지도력의 확립을 통해 진정한 교화력을 담보해야 한다는 교훈을 주고 있다. Tzu Chi Foundation was established in 1966 by Venerable Dharma Master Cheng Yen on the impecunious east coast of Taiwan. For over 44 years, the foundation has been contributing to better social and community services, medical care, education and humanism in Taiwan and around the world. From the first 30 members, housewives who saved two cents from their grocery money each day to help the poor, the foundation has grown to over five million members in 47 countries. Master Cheng Yen firmly believes that suffering in this world is caused not only by material deprivation but, more importantly, also by spiritual poverty. She feels that the lack of altruistic love for others has been the root of many problems in this world. Thus, the foundation’s guiding principle on charity is to “help the poor and educate the rich.” Tzu Chi’s missions focus on giving material aid to the needy and inspiring love and humanity to both givers and receivers. In addition to charity, the foundation dedicates itself in the fields of medicine, education, environmental protection, international relief work and the establishment of the world’s third largest marrow donor registry. It also promotes humanistic values and community volunteerism. Through helping those in need, Tzu Chi volunteers take on the path of bodhisattva practices, the way to Buddhahood. |
