This paper attempts to compare and analyze the different versions of Ten Ox-herding Pictures invented by Kuo'an. Basing on the collected versions, the author investigates which of the Zen concepts being accepted or strengthened by means of images and therefore sort out the logic behind image. Although the poem (song) written by Kua'an attaching to the pictures maintained stable in text in the succeeding dynasties, the various versions of prints and paintings showed different understanding of Zen thoughts judging from the from the change of subtitles, which making the content of Zen practice guidebook more abundant. The The Ox-herding Pictures depends on the explanation of attached preface and poetry, however, however, the pictures have their intrinsic logic, which can not simply treated as a pictorial expression of the text
