천태의 상승설은 직접적인 상승설이 아닌 사상적으로 간접적인 상승을 하고 있다. 현대에 이 부분에 관해서 여러 견해와 타당성에 관한 다른 시각이 있을수도 있다. 그러나 천태에 관해서는 방대한 저술과 활동을 통해서 상승설의 타당성을 입증받고 있다고 생각된다. 이러한 상승설의 종류는 금구와 금사상승 그리고 9사상승, 경권상승, 직수상승이다. 그 가운데 가장 중요하고 크게 존중되었던 것은 금구상승과 금사상승이다. 금구상승은 금사상승을 세우기 위한 전제이고 천태교학의 원류는 용수에서 시작됨을 밝히고 있다. 금사상승은 혜문, 혜사, 지의의 상승을 보이고 있다. 천태종은 이러한 상승설을 기반으로 『불조통기』에서 산가(山家)와 산외(山外)의 양파로 갈라진 뒤를 이어서 지례 문하의 산가파를 정통으로 삼는 견지에 서게 된다. 이 후 천태의 역사는 이 『불조통기』를 통해서 살펴보는 것이 정석이 되었다. 그런데 이러한 상승설에 기반한 천태산계통의 상승설에 비해서 옥천사(玉泉寺)를 중심으로 한 상승설도 있었다. 그 시기는 지의 이후 담연 이전까지의 기간이다. 이 시기는 천태산계열의 활동이 암흑시대로 불릴정도로 겨우 명맥만 유지한 때이다. 이 때에 상대적으로 왕성하게 활동을 하고 있다. 이 후 이 옥천사계의 사람으로 주목받는 많은 인물이 배출되고 많은 활약을 하게된다. 따라서 이 옥천사를 중심으로 활약한 많은 분들이 있었음을 알 수 있다.
T'ien-t'ai 's Inheritance hypothesis is not a direct inheritance but that of a indirect phenomenon. There may be other ideas and perspectives on its adequacy at modern times. However, through vast amount of writings and activities, T'ien-t'ai 's hypothesis on Inheritance is now thought to have been verified. On this hypothesis there are types such as Geum-gu, Geum-sa Heritance and 9 sa Heritance, Kyung-kwon Heritance, Jik-su Heritance. Among those the most important and respected was the Geum-gu Heritance and Geum-sa Heritance. Geum-gu Heritance was a premise which upon Geum-sa Heritance was set up and Clarifies that T'ien-t'ai education school 's original flow have initiated from Yong-Su. Geum-sa Heritance shows the heritance of Hye-moon, Hye-sa and Chih-i. As this Hypothesis on Heritance its root, T'ien-t'ai made its traditional stand on San-ga pa of Ji-lae Moon-ha in succession to [Bul-jo-tong-gi] which was divided into the Mountain Household and Outside of Mountain. Afterwards, it has become the principle to observe T'ien-t'ai 's history through [Bul-jo-tong-gi]However, there has been Heritance hypothesis centering Ok-cheon temple in comparison to T'ien-t'ai -san channel's hypothesis. That period consists of post Chih-i and pre Dan-yeon. This period was when Cheon-tae-san channel's activities were only so barely maintained that it was called its dark period. It is having active performances during this period. After, many attention-receiving personnels of this Ok-cheon temple's channel was produced and made much performances. Therefore it is thought to be adequate as whole that T'ien-t'ai 's hypothesis on Heritance should consider both the Geum-sa Heritance and those who took action around the Ok-cheon temple.
