The Three Essentials of Kanhua Chan refer to the three attitudes - great faith, great efforts and great doubt - which are essential in practicing Kanhua Chan. The first to advocate them was Chan Master Gaofeng Yuanmiao高峰原妙 of the Yuan Dynasty in his Gaofeng yuanmiao chanshi chanyao(hereafter, Chanyao)高峰和尙禪要. This paper examined this three essentials based on『Chanyao』. The great faith is an attitude as a prerequisite to Hwadu investigation, so it should be adamant as it is both a starting point of the Buddhist practice and a foundation for enlightenment. These faiths are divided into four categories such as: 1) faith in enlightenment, 2) faith in Buddhahood, 3) faith in hwadu investigation, 4) faith in an authentic master. The great faith in the Three Essentials of Kanhua means faith in Hwadu investigation. The great efforts are an attitude needed when practitioners strive even harder to attain an ultimate enlightenment. Therefore, this stage of practice is when practitioners undergo some fear or discriminating thoughts in the course of their practice after becoming fairly used to hwadu questioning. If practitioners push themselves much harder only investigating their own hwadu at such a time, they are at last able to generate the great doubt and experience the stage of thought-free concentration. Like this, the great efforts, followed by the great doubt, provide energy to eventually attain the ultimate stage of awakening. The great doubt is when there is only uninterrupted hwadu doubt without any afflictions, slackness, distraction. In other words, as a prior stage of thought-free concentration, or the ultimate goal of Kanhua Chan, this stage consists of singleminded hwadu questioning. The three essentials in themselves are the sequential stages of hwadu investigation while having an organic relationship with one another and producing synergy. Here, the great faith is an attitude that gives rise to the great doubt; the great efforts is that which allows the practitioners to reach thought-free concentration. The three essentials are generally referred to as the faith, the efforts, and the doubt; they are, however, different in their subtle meanings from those dealt with in this paper. As mentioned above, what is important here is the relationships among the three and their definite meanings. Especially, the great doubt described in 『Chanyao』 is different from the hwadu doubt in its general sense. After all, the former is a state of single-minded doubt whereas the latter means a hwadu investigation in its comprehensive sense. |
