본 논문에서는 근대의 욕망추구에 따른 대립과 갈등의 문제에 대해 불교의 무아론이 어떠한 해결방안을 제시해줄 수 있는지 살펴보고자 한다. 논자는 이를 위해 상좌부불교의 무아론과 남방불교의 수행서인 청정도론의 내용을 고찰하였다. 청정도론은 三學의 내용을 七淸淨(Sattavidhā Visuddhi), 즉 계청정, 마음청정, 견청정, 의심을 제거함에 의한 청정, 도와 도 아님에 대한 지견청정, 도닦음에 대한 지견청정, 지견청정으로 설명하는데 특징이 있다. 불교수행은 분별에 의해 초래된 욕망과 소유욕을 변화시킨다. 불교수행은 자신에 대한 집착을 버리고 그 관심의 대상을 다른 모든 대상으로 확대시킨다. 그 근거가 되는 것이 바로 무아이다. 불교에서 말하는 무아는 ‘나’를 전제로 하는 ‘상대적 무아’가 아닌 ‘절대적 무아’를 의미한다. 근대이후 욕망의 추구과정에서 문제가 되었던 대립과 충돌문제는 무아론의 종교적, 실천적 의미를 통해 문제해결의 실마리를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.
This study aims to find that Anātman may provide ways of resolving over confrontation and conflict caused by the desire in modern era. I studied Anātman concept of Theravāda Buddhism and Visuddhimagga, the guide book for practice in Southern Buddhism. Visuddhimagga is marked by explaining the Three types of learning by using Sattavidhā Visuddhi: sīla(saṁvāra), citta(kusalacittekaggatā samādhi), diṭṭhi-visuddhi, kaṇkhāvitaraṇa-visuddhi, maggāmaggañāṇadassana-visuddhi, paṭipadāñāṇadassana-visuddhi, ñāṇadassana-visuddhi. The practice of Buddhism transforms the desire and the possessiveness caused by the discrimination. The practice of Buddhism makes us not be obsessed with ourselves and increases the range of our interests to the others. Anātman is the basis for that and is not 'the relavie Anātman' but 'the absolute Anātman'. We can find the solution to resolve the problems caused by desire through the religious and practical meanings of Anātman.
