This study attempts to understand the concept of ecosystem through that of Dharmadhātu. Dharmadhātu refers to the space and order that encompass the entire universe in Buddhism. Dharmadhātu and the ecosystem can be compared with each other in the following ground; the world being likened to the Indrajāla, Dharmadhātu has all the beings connected with each other under the order of relations. It's the similar case with the ecosystem, where organisms are the constituents of the biospherical net, or the knots of intrinsic relations. Thus the ecosystem is a structure with a system that is maintained by the relations of interconnectedness and interactions. That's why the ecosystem is the total addition of the constituents and individuals elements can only be understood in the context of the whole. Both the concept of Dharmadhātu and that of ecosystem are based on the perception that all the beings are connected with each other and interact one another. In the aspect of Dharmadhātu, all existences cannot be possible on their own and can be only confirmed for their being itself in the holistic relations. Such kind of relations are regarded as the Dharmadhātu woven out of the Indrajāla by the Zen ideas, while they are taken as the knots of intrinsic relations in ecology. Therefore, every individual including humans can have its existence in the general relations such as Dharmadhātu and the ecosystem, which kind of consciousness serves as a sense of value with which to overcome anthropocentrism that is the base belief of human destructions of environment. Dharmadhātu is the world that is maintained by the 'one truth(一眞)' or the order called 'Dharma.' They also see that 'the one(一者)' rules the world in the traditional Western thoughts. While the one from West implies the vertical relationships and order under which one dominates the whole, the order of Dharmadhātu is formed out of the horizontal relationships among many different beings in the Zen ideas. In the Zen world, the relationships between all the beings and the objects give birth to the order maintaining Dharmadhātu and the ecosystem, where all the beings can be confirmed their intrinsic values. |
