| 摘要 | The place that the Seon of the Silla Dynasty holds in Korean Seon is truly important. Since the Seon teachings were first brought to the peninsula during this time period, the Silla Dynasty represents the beginning of Korean Seon. The importance of Silla Seon can be seen in the following aspects. The first is the voluntary acceptance of the Seon teachings. The import of the teachings into Silla were continuous, from the time Beopnang(法朗) and Sinhaeng(神行) brought the Seon teachings of the Niu-tou sect(牛頭宗), a Chinese Chan sect, to the many imports toward the end of Silla. In comparison to the transmission of a relatively simple style of Seon by Bodhidharma to China, the transmission of the Seon teachings to the Silla Dynasty included many different traditions. These ranged from the two powerhouses of Chinese Chan at the time, Shih-tou's(石頭) Honam style and Ma-tsu's(馬祖) Gangseo style, to the Northern sect of Jiseon. One could say that the first Korean to bring the Seon teachings to his native country was Musang(無相) of the Jeongjung sect(淨衆宗) Musang's Jeongjung sect became renowned while it was based at the Seocheon(四川) Temple during the Silla Dynasty. Many people were said to have received Musang's teachings, from Ma-tsu, who was the leading figure of Chinese Chan at the time, to Hataek Sinhwe(荷擇神會). Moreover, on top of the voluntary acceptance of the Seon teachings, a new form of discrimination between Seon and Scholastic Buddhism was emphasized during this period. The Seon style during late Silla and early Goryeo consisted mainly of the Korean Seon sects of the nine mountains. These schools continued to prosper from the developmental period of late Goryeo to the changing of dynasties to the Joseon Dynasty. It is possible, on the one hand, to classify Korean Seon into the following time periods. Thus the time period from the end of Silla to early Goryeo can be called the transmissive period of Korean Seon. The time period from early Goryeo to mid-Goryeo can be called the formative period of Korean Seon. Furthermore, the time period after mid-Goryeo can be called the developmental period of Korean Seon. The Joseon Dynasty can be called the inheritance period of Korean Seon. Recent history can be called the resurgent period of Korean Seon. The aforementioned classification of time periods is widely accepted. But it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that the significance of Silla Seon is that it marked the first transmission of Seon to Korea. Hence, the successive transmission of Seon from China to Korea provides the basis for a framework for Korean Seon. |
