| 摘要 | This paper aims to explicate the concept of calmimg or concerning(samatha, 止) and insight(vipassanā, 觀) which is known as the essence of Buddhist meditation in early buddhism. I selected Suttanipāta(經集), Dhammapada(法句經), the Pali canon and the Four Chinese Agama(阿含) as material for more concrete analysis of samatha and vipassanā. But, it is not easy to find the Samatha and Vipassanā as a couple of typical term which is stand for ways of meditation in these texts. Therefore we can't see their concrete and directly meanings in the texts. In this paper I tried to solve this problem and to make cleared these concepts. I gives attention to their derivatives, let alone the couple of term Samatha and Vipassanā. So, it can be put to question, 'What is the objects of calming and seeing'? The object of seeing is the major doctrine of Early Buddhism, as it can be cleared former result of study. However the object of calming is relation to matter of desire. On the basis of analysing the texts, Samatha is not characteristic of concentration but removal of sensual desire. Therefore, the ways meditation of Early Buddhism stands for samatha and vipassanā are the ways to controlling mind especially methods to manage sensual desire, by means of 'to be calmed and seen'. |
