화엄사 승가대학은 조선후기 및 일제하 불교에서 명성을 떨친 화엄사 강원의 역사의 전통을 계승하고 있다. 그러나 근현대 불교라는 고난의 세월의 속에서 화엄사 및 화엄사 승가대학의 많은 내우외환을 겪었다. 화엄사가 자리하고 있는 지리산 권내의 사찰들은 조선후기 교학의 터전이었다. 그러한 바탕하에서 화엄사 강원이 위치하였고, 陣震應이라는 대강백이 이곳에서 교학의 교육을 구현하였다. 그러나 화엄사 강원은 일제말기에 문을 닫고 말았다. 더욱이 1954년부터 10여 년간 전개되었던 불교정화운동으로 인하여 화엄사의 강원교육 및 수행 전통은 중단되었다. 화엄사가 안정된 시점은 1970년대 초이었다. 화엄문도회의 산파역이었던 김도광이 1969년 11월에 주지로 부임하면서 화엄사는 정상화되었던 것이다. 화엄사 주지에 취임한 김도광은 화엄사의 안정을 기하면서도 화엄사의 교육 전통을 복구하고 종단 미래를 책임질 인재양성이라는 목표를 구현하기 위해 화엄사 강원을 재개하였다. 이로부터 화엄사 강원, 화엄사 승가대학은 한국 현대불교 교육사의 한 페이지를 열면서 오늘에 이르렀다. 그래서 본고에서는 위와 같은 조선후기 화엄사의 역사와 일제하 강원 역사를 유의하면서 화엄사 승가대학의 어제와 오늘을 살펴보고자 한다. 본 고찰에서는 화엄사 승가대학에 대한 관련자료를 제시하는 방법으로 논지를 전개한다. 이는 화엄사 승가대학의 역사적 성찰, 현실의 분석, 미래 지향, 비판 등에 필요한 기초적인 자료 제공이라는 성격을 갖기 위함이다.
Hwaeomsa Buddhist Seminary has taken over the historical tradition of Hwaeomsa classroom that was renowned in the Buddhist world since late Chosun and in the era of Japanese ruling. In the suffering period of recent Buddhism, however, Hwaeomsa and its Buddhist Seminary have experienced lots of internal and external troubles. Buddhist temples in the Mt. Jiri area, in which Hwaeoms is located, had been the ground for pariyatti in late Chosun era. Hwaeomsa classroom was situated in such foundation, and the great teacher named Jinwung Jin realized the education of pariyatti in there. Hwaeomsa classroom was forced to close, however, at the end of Japanese colonial period. To make matters worse, the education in Hwaeomsa classroom and tradition of ascetic exercise had been suspended by the Buddhist purification movement unfolded for no less than 10 years since 1954. It was early 1970s that Hwaeomsa was stabilized. Hwaeomsa was normalized as Dogwang Kim, who had been assisting the formation of Hwaeom Disciples Association, was appointed as the head priest of Hwaeomsa in Nov, 1969. Dogwang Kim, inaugurated as the head priest of Hwaeomsa, resumed the Hwaeomsa classroom to restore the educational tradition of Hwaeomsa and to embody the goal of talent cultivation who will take over future responsibility for the religious fraternity. Hwaeomsa classroom and Buddhist Seminary opened a page of education history of modern Buddhism, which has come up to today, from this time on. We would like to look into the yesterday and today of Hwaeomsa Buddhist Seminary in this paper, therefore, keeping Hwaeomsa's history of late Chosun and its classroom history under Japanese ruling in mind. The argument in this study has been unfolded with the presentation of relevant data of Hwaeomsa Buddhist Seminary. This is for the provision of basic materials that are necessary for the historical introspection, analysis of reality, future orientation, criticism, and so on of Hwaeomsa Buddhist Seminary.
