摘要
본고는 조선 중기 대표적인 선승(禪僧)의 한 분인 진묵 일옥(震黙一玉)의 삶과 사상에 대한 고찰이다. 진묵 일옥은 고려 말 나옹 혜근과 더불어 이 땅에 살다 가신 석가모니 부처님의 화신불로 민중 속에서 추앙 받고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 진묵의 삶과 사상은 신비에 감추어져 있다. 몇 편의 진묵 관련 논문이 있긴 하지만 불교학계에 있어서 진묵 사상의 실체와 불교사적 평가는 제대로 이루어지지 못하고 있다. 이러한 이유는 진묵 스스로 남긴 글이 한편의 시(詩)를 제외하고는 남아있지 않기 때문이다. 따라서 진묵에 관한 연구는 전해져 내려오는 수많은 설화를 중심으로 살펴볼 수밖에 없다. 설화 속에는 진묵과 관련된 실재적 모습을 포함하고 있긴 하지만 민중들의 한(恨)과 염원이 혼재되어 있기 마련이다. 따라서 진묵의 실재적 모습을 드러내는 데는 일정한 제약이 있기 마련이다. 본고에서는 기존의 연구물을 토대로 하여 진묵조사의 자취, 진묵조사의 사상, 진묵조사의 영향 등을 조명하였다. 먼저 진묵이 살던 시대적 배경과 생애에 대하여 언급하였다. 다음으로 그의 사상에 대하여 법맥과 선사상, 진속일여(眞俗一如)의 사상, 소요유(逍遙遊)사상, 석가모니의 화신불(化身佛), 효사상 등으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 진묵조사의 영향에 대하여는 미륵신앙과 신종교 등에 끼치고 있는 영향을 중심으로 언급하였다. 현재 한국 불교학계에 있어 조선시대 불교 특히 중기와 후기의 불교사상에 대한 연구는 극히 미약하다. 따라서 조선 중기 대표적인 선승이었던 진묵의 사상에 대한 고찰은 비록 일정한 한계를 지니고 있다 하더라고 다각적으로 시도해야 한다고 생각한다. 본고는 자료의 제약으로 인한 한계 속에서도 조선 중기 선사상에 대한 인식의 지평을 확장시키려 했다는데 의의가 있다 할 것이다.
The purpose of this paper is to study the life and thought of Jin-muk Il-ok(震黙一玉), the representative Zen master in the middle of Choseon dynasty. Jin-muk(震黙) is respected as Buddha's new existence after rebirth. But his life and thought was wrapped in mystery. There are some papers about Jin-muk(震黙), but the substance of his thought and evaluation by the viewpoint of Buddhism are not estimated practically in the world of Buddhism studies. But there is no article written by Jin-muk(震黙) except one poet. So I couldn't help examine his life and thought through a lot of tales. Those tales include the practical figure connected with Jin-muk(震黙), but the tales are mixed by the people's resentment and desire. So we have restriction to indicate his practical figure. I illuminated his trace, his thought and its influence through the existing papers. First, I made mention of background of the times and his life. Secondly, I devided his thought into some parts, the vein of the law and Zen thought, the thought of the sameness with this world and ultimate truth, the thought of sauntering, the thought of the Buddhas of transformation and the thought of filial duty. After then I considerated them. Lastly, I referred to the influence of him on the thought of future Buddha and the new religion. There is feeble study on Buddhism in the middle and later period of Choseon dynasty. Though we have some restriction to study on him, we have to study on the Zen master with various angles. I tried to extend the horizon of cognition on the Zen thought in the middle period of Choseon dynasty in same restriction of materials.
