There exists a fundamental gap between Chinese philosopher Yangming (1472-1529) and the Korean monk, the Venerable Chinul (1158-1210) that can't be resolved. Chinul does not believe that we can solve the problem of suffering, if caused by ignorance, by engaging the real world. He delves into a more fundamental problem. On the other hand, Yangming tries to solve problems by engaging the real world. According to Yangming, all fundamental problems are rooted in the real world. While Chinul emphasizes 'the world of a state', Yangming focuses on 'the world of a fact'. Thus, according to Chinul, the real world into which Yangming delves is only Bunbyeolji (a wisdom knowing the universal phenomena) and, ultimately, in vain. According to Yangming, Chinul's mind philosophy and Mubunbyeolji (a true wisdom transcending knowledge of the universal phenomena) can't be a universal law that rules the whole world. It is only Heomu Jeokmyeol (a state transcending the stage of life and death). Despite these differences, these two thinkers share one point in common, and fortunately, it is the most important part: the importance of mind. Both Yangming and Chinul, straddling the Middle Ages, from 'the philosophy of mind' represented by Yangji (the essence of mind) to 'Gongjeok Yeongji'(the Self-Nature of True Mind, or Buddha Mind), suggest a very modern, independent and autonomous view of human nature. In this regard, their thinking framework travels beyond any single age and portends significant meaning today. |
