| 摘要 | The growth of vegetarianism was connected with the doctrine of ahimsa which was emphasized in Buddhism and Janism. It was with the growth of Mahayana Buddhism and the new Hinduism that strict vegetarianism became widespread in India. This paper is to inquire into the origin and development of vegetarianism in Hinduism and Buddhism, and to compare the meaning of the prohibition of meat-eating in the two religious traditions. With regard to the prohibition of meat-eating, Hinduism calls to account the intrinsic nature of the food, while Buddhism gives attention to the method by which the food is obtained. According to Vinaya scriptures, Buddhist monks were allowed to accept meat if it was pure from three angles (trikoṭi-pariśuddha), i.e., if the monk had noot seen nor heard that the animal had been killed particularly for him, nor had any reason for suspecting so. Here ‘pure’ means right, properly and lawfully obtained, and it does not denote the intrinsic nature of the food, as in Brahmanism. |
