| 摘要 | Zen Master Ch’oui Uisun (1786~1866)proposed his theory of two types of Zen in order to point out and to correct the flaws in the theory of three types of Zen formulated by Zen Master Paekp’a Kungson (1767~1852). According to Paekp'a, Zen consists of three types: Patriarch Zen; Tathagata Zen; and intellectually ratiocinating Zen. He viewed Patriarch Zen, Tathagata Zen, and intellectually ratiocinating Zen as higher, central, and lower indriya, respectively. When the three types of Zen were seen in terms of the three huatous of the Linji School, the first, second, and third huatous respectively corresponded with Patriarch Zen, Tathagata Zen, and intellectually ratiocinating Zen. In addition, Paekp'a thus classified the Five Schools of Zen Buddhism in terms of his theory of three types of Zen: the Linji and Yunmen Schools fell under Patriarch Zen; and the Caodong, Weiyang, and Fayan Schools belonged to Tathagata Zen. In other words, he systematized Zen by assigning grades to it and stratified the Five Schools, with the Linji School at the top. However, claiming such ideas of Paekp'a as erroneous, Ch'ouiproposed the theory of two types of Zen: Tathagata Zen and Patriarch Zen. According to Ch'oui, Zen could be divided into Tathagata Zen and Patriarch Zen when man was the standard. In terms of method, it could be classified into intellectually ratiocinating Zen and Zen outside formal teachings and organizations. Here, man designated Lord Buddha and the Patriarch and method signified the method of inculcating teachings. In other words, Patriarch Zen equaled Zen outside formal teachings and organizations and Tathagata Zen wasintellectually ratiocinating Zen. In terms of man, Zen could be distinguished into Tathagata Zen and Patriarch Zen. As for method, Zen could be divided into intellectually ratiocinating Zen and Zen outside formal teachings and organizations. Behind Ch'oui's claims are the following assumptions: as the Tathagata, Lord Buddha is a Tathagata Zen practitioner; because he taught by an ascetic training method outside formal teachings and organizations, he is at once a Zen practitioner outside formal teachings and organizations and a Patriarch Zen practitioner; and because he provided theoretical explanation, he is an intellectually ratiocinating Zen practitioner. In addition, the Patriarch is by nature a Patriarch Zen practitioner; he is a Zen practitioner outside formal teachings and organizations because he inculcated his teachings through an ascetic training method outside formal teachings and organizations and he is a Tathagata Zen practitioner and an intellectually ratiocinating Zen practitioner because he provided a method of enlightenment through language and reason. Despite the difference in the terminology used, from Ch'oui's perspective, they all arethe same Zen in terms of their function. In this respect, it is both possible and valid to establish the following equation: Patriarch Zen = Tathagata Zen = Zen outside formal teachings and organizations = intellectually ratiocinating Zen = Lord Buddha = Patriarch = Zen = Sasana. Because such a view is different from traditional Zen doctrine, it may be termed One Mind Zen. In other words, Ch'oui sought, from the stance of One Mind Zen, to correct Paekp'a, who had brought about the abstraction and schematization of Zen through his own classification. Nevertheless, it must also be acknowledged that Paekp'a's theory of three types of Zen has contributed to a correct understanding of Zen theory. |
