From the perspective of the ecological crisis, one of the most difficult problems of rationalism lies in the attitude that regards nature in an objective way. Human reason, the very foundation of rationalism, is dualistic in its cognition, thus subject and object are presupposed. In this respect, the separation between nature and humans is a necessary conclusion of rationalism. As long as we view the environment from a rational perspective we cannot see it other than as an object separate from man. This attitude which regards nature as mere object to be conquered and developed for mans' welfare, is the product of rationalist thought. As a result, conquering and utilizing nature has been considered as human beings' rightful duty, and nature is thus degraded into a mere resource. From the viewpoint of Buddhism and Indian philosophy, environmental pollution is nothing but an outward manifestation of inner pollution, arising from the human mind. Several Buddhist scriptures say that when moral depravity is prevalent in human societies it causes a harmful change in the environment as well as in mind and body. Human thinking has brought about tremendous change in environmental conditions, and, as a result, nature's ability to purify itself has become failed. Unprecedented air pollution and the devastation of rivers and mountains are natural outcomes of a nature that has lost its own self-purification function. According to the Buddha's teachings, the fundamental reason for such a serious ecological crisis is human beings' endless greed. There is another dimension of Buddhist deep ecology. Because of its spiritual orientation it talks of essential unity of all existences. All entities exist in the same Buddhakṣetra and share the same Buddhabhāva. All existences have mutuality and participatory being. From the doctrine of interdependent origination of all phenomena it follows that Buddha's approach to reality, and hence to ecology, is holistic and integral. Buddhism does not entertain human-nature or nature-culture or body-mind or heredity-environment or theory-praxis or thought action dichotomy. Further, the Buddhist approach is spiritualistic and teleological. The teachings give us a vision and an approach to cosmo-centric eco-ethics, which is a widening of moral sensitivity to view human actions in a cosmic context. In modern times we need such eco-conduct to solve the eco-crises. |
