| 摘要 | 1960년대의 한국불교계는 정화의 소용돌이 속에서 앞날을 예견할 수 없을 만큼 암울했다. 성철(性徹) 스님의 백일법문(百日法門)은 바로 이 같은 어둠 속에서 포효처럼 울려 퍼진 법문이다. 종단의 갈등 속에서 정신적으로 방황하는 승려들에게 백일법문은 출가의 참뜻을 되새기는 경종이 되었고, 분규에 실망한 불자들에게는 정법에 대한 믿음을 심어주는 설법이었다. 백일법문의 핵심은 중도로 요약된다. 백일법문을 관통하는 축이 바로 중도(中道)의 원리다. 이는 다양한 불교적 요소가 존재하는 한국의 상황에선 중요한 통합의 원리가 아닐 수 없다. 나아가 민족적 분단과 이데올로기적 대립 속에서 갈등하던 사람들에게 중도설법은 이분법적 가치관을 극복할 불빛과도 같았다. 이 같은 의미를 지닌 백일법문이 설해진지 40년을 내다보고 있다. 하지만 백일법문에 대한 충분한 연구와 평가가 뒤따르지 못하고 있는 것이 현실이다. 성철 스님은 우리와 동시대를 호흡한 스승이었고, 한국불교가 처한 상황을 우리와 같은 눈높이에서 바라보고 중도설법을 설파했다. 다시 말해 백일법문은 우리와 가장 가까운 선지식의 혜안이 담겨 있는 설법이라는 점에서 다른 어떤 경론 못지않게 현재적 관점에서 풍부한 시사점을 담고 있다. 본고는 이 같은 인식을 토대로 백일법문의 전체적 개요를 고찰해 봄으로써 현대 한국불교에서 백일법문이 갖는 의의를 재평가해 보고자 한다. The Korean Buddhist circles in the 1960s were too gloomy to predict their future in the vortex of ‘the cleanup drive「淨化」’. Ven. Master Songch'ol's ‘Hundred-Day Dharma Talks[百日法門]’ resounded like a yelling throughout in this very darkness. The Hundred-Day Dharma Talks became an alarm to help mediate on the true meaning of the Buddhist priesthood to the priests who were emotionally adrift in the midst of the religious order's conflicts. It also became the Buddhist preaching that implants beliefs in the Dharma for the believers who were disappointed at the division. The core of the Hundred-Day Dharma Talks is summed up as the middle path. The pivot that penetrates through the Hundred-Day Dharma Talks is the very principle of the middle path. This is an important principle of integration in the situation of Korea where various Buddhist factors exist. Furthermore, the preaching of the middle path was like a torch for those who suffered from the national division and ideological conflicts to overcome the dichotomic values. With these meanings, the Hundred-Day Dharma Talks is seeing its coming 40th anniversary. However, the reality is that few studies and evaluations on it have followed. Ven. Master Songch'ol was a mentor who lived with us in the same age. He delivered the preaching of the middle path from the same point of view with us when he saw the circumstances faced by the Korean Buddhism. In other words, in terms of containing the keen insight of Zen knowledge closest to us, the Hundred-Day Dharma Talks has plenty of implications from a present perspective like any other discourse. By considering the general summary of the Hundred-Day Dharma Talks on the basis of this awareness, this thesis purposes to reestimate its significance in the Korean Buddhism. |
