The modern age in Korean histoy is generally defined as the period from the King Gojong era(1864~1906), Joseon Kingdom to the end of the Japanese imperialistic rule(1910~1945). Among these periods I will study on the ideologies of Buddhist Reform Movements and their actualization especially during the Japanese rule. There are three major fields in the ideologies of those reform movements. Those are at first the establishment of the true dharmas, secondly the engagement in the secular society and thirdly the pursuit of modern studies on the Doctrines of Buddhism. Firstly, as the establishment of the true dharmas I take an instance of Gyeongheo's Samadhi and Prajna Community Movement, Yongseong's Meditation and Agriculture Movement and Hakmyeong's Threefold Training Movement. Secondly, as the engagement in the secular society I instance Yeongho's and Yong-un's efforts for the establishment of the Independent Unified Buddhist Order and Yongseong's efforts for the propagation of Buddha's Teachings. Thirdly, as the pursuit of modern studies on the doctrines of Buddhism, there were the establishments of modern schools, the publication of the magazines for Buddhist culture and the translation of Chinese Tripitakas. If I appraise the outcomes of the reform movements of this era, I can point out that in the field of the establishment of the true dharmas, the programs of practices for monks were too much concentrated in the meditation fields with lesser emphasis for studies on the doctrines, and the programs of practices for laymen were too much leaned on chanting of Buddhas and Dharanis without systematic teachings programs on the doctrines. The financial self-reliance as a material basis for the Samgha was studied through the Meditation and Agriculture Movement. But the more discussions are necessary on that problem. Secondly, although there were many limitations on the issue of the engagement in the secular society, our predecessors kept Korean Buddhism's identity through the estblishment of the independent Buddhist Order without yielding to the Japanese Buddhism. In the field of propagation, the Buddhist Society could not make a guideline for an unified propagation policy due to their severe situations. Thirdly, in the field of the pursuit of modern studies on the doctrines of Buddhism, there has been a big progress in modern schools for monks from the establishment of Myeongjin School in 1906, to the upgrade of the Dongguk University in 1953. But there was no such a progress in the education for the laymen. And although there were the publication of many magazines of Buddhist culture and the Holy Canons of Buddhism, the unified versions of the translation of the major Tripitakas are not yet available. Those works have to be achieved as soon as possible.
