You can quite often see many people in the West going to Zen Centers to practise Buddhistic ways, reading books on Buddhism and meditating on one’s own life. The present spreading of Buddhism in the West is almost unbelievable, since a century has past after Buddhism was introduced into the West. In the beginning, Buddhism in the West attracted only a few scholars and artists, then by and by was spread to the general thoughts of people. In the modern society of the West, Buddhism settles down as a new paradigm and shows a new way in almost every field, such as scholarship, art, living and so forth. Now Buddhism is not only a symbol of the East, but also a way of philosophy, aesthetics and life which has the universality. Arnold Toynbee said “The meeting of Buddhism and the West is one of the most significant events”, and predicted that Buddhism would change many things in the West. In fact, a lot of changes in the West happened through Buddhism. People in religion, philosophy, literature, art and so forth came to search for a new way of approaching through changes of thinking. One of the biggest characteristics of Buddhism’s spreading in the West is that spreading has been done through the teaching of Zen. Now it is not much difficult to see Zen Centers in Europe and US. Zen Buddhism was introduced to the West mostly by Japanese, Tibetan and Vietnam, now many westerners are experiencing Zen in many Centers. Particularly, under the influences of Dalai Lama who was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, then Bernardo Bertolucci who directed the movie “Little Buddha”, Jang Jean-Jacques Annual of “Seven Years in Tibet”, Martin Scorsese of “Kundun”, Buddhism is becoming a way of the universal life. A distinctive feature of the Eastern, particularly Korean Buddhism is enlightenment. In other words, Eastern Buddhists are aiming at higher enlightenment at the higher level of the greater vehicle(Mahayana) and don’t know much about the lesser vehicle(Hinayana) while Western Buddhists are concerned about the lesser enlightenment. Western Buddhists practise Buddhist methods to live the present life richly and comfortably. Of course, in the West there are a few monks who practise the Buddhist way to achieve enlightenment, but most of ordinary people make Buddhist efforts to get practical insights. At this point, I have to consider social, artistic and philosophical roles of Buddhism. Buddhistic system and form have been changing in accordance with the times, I hope that the Western Buddhists study a process of making a new paradigm socially and help Korean Buddhism spread to the world. I think it is obvious that based on their own culture, they adopt a new thoughts and make their own creative culture. In this treatise, under the above-mentioned |
