摘要The present thesis intends to analyze and fully translate the epistolary exchange carried out by the Buddhist monk Lushan Huiyuan (334-417) and the General of the Southern Regions He Wuji (?-410) at the beginning of the fifth century. The correspondence—included in the collection of Buddhist texts titled Hong ming ji (Collection for the Propagation and Clarification [of Buddhism])—not only stands out as an exposition of the reception of an Indian Buddhist custom on Chinese soil, namely the act of baring the right shoulder, but it also discloses significative aspects of the philosophical discussion between Buddhism and Confucianism during the early medieval period.
