| 摘要 | 본 논문에서는 인도에서 오랫동안 쇠퇴되어 있었던 불교가 근현대에 이르러서 석가족에 의해 새롭게 부흥하기 시작한 역사적인 배경과 근거 등을 살펴보았다. 석가족 왕국의 멸망 이후에도 석가족은 계속 존속하여 현재 인도 전역에는 상당수 분포되어 있다. 붓다의 성씨인 이들이 어떤 지역에서 어떻게 살고 있는지 알아봄으로써 석가족 불교부흥운동의 시작과 현황을 살펴봤다. 1900년대 이후부터 시작된 석가족의 불교부흥운동이 현재 어떠한 문제점을 안고 있는지 조명하여 앞으로의 방향과 과제를 모색해보았다. 불교부흥운동을 위한 활동으로는 평화행진, 불교 개종식, 법당건축, 학교건립 등 여러 가지가 꾸준히 있어졌고, 2000년도 이후에는 더 활발해졌다. 본고에서는 특히 UP(Uttar Pradesh)州 석가족의 활동을 중심으로 접근해 보았다. 이런 활동을 해나가는데 있어서 미흡한 부분이나 문제점은 본 연구자가 현장에서 직접 참여했던 경험을 바탕으로 다루어 보았다. 결국 석가족들이 펼쳐 나갈 불교운동은 바른 불교, 쉬운 불교, 생활 불교라는 방향을 가지고 전개해야 하며, 이것이 붓다의 가르침인 평화와 평등의 원칙 속에서 이루어져야 한다고 본다. 이러한 운동 방식이 석가족 불교운동을 넘어서 인도불교부흥운동의 방향을 잡아가는 데에도 도움이 되었으면 한다. This paper covers the historical background and foundation that began a new revival of Buddhism, which had declined over a long period of time in India, by the Sakyas in the modern and current periods. After the fall of Sakya kingdom, the Sakyas have spread around India and they still have a considerable population. This article examines the initial and current status of Sakya Buddhist Revivalism by studying the regions where these people with Buddha's surname live. Furthermore, it suggests future directions of Sakya Buddhist revivalist movement, which began after 1900s, by studying its current problems. Activities for Sakya Buddhist Revivalism have been active, especially since 2000 and they include peace marches, religious conversion ceremonies, temple construction, and welfare efforts such as building schools. This article focuses on the activities of Sakyas living in little known U.P. (Utter Pradesh) district, and examines the shortcomings and issues, based on the author's experiences. Sakya Buddhist revivalist movement should aim for honest Buddhism, easy Buddhism, and natural Buddhism. Moreover, religious conversion movement should only be carried out in the principle of peace under Buddha’s teachings, not in conflicts within communities. These principles will help suggest the right directions for Buddhist revival movement in India, beyond Sakya movement. |
