| 摘要 | 한암을 이해함에 우리는 두 가지의 면을 동시에 보아야 한다. 하나는 그의태생적인 성향이고 다른 하나는 당시 불교계의 상황에 대한 그의 진단과 대응책이다. 이 두 가지는 복합적으로 얽혀 그의 삶을 지탱하고 결정짓는다. 그가 살았던 시기는 일제 암흑기로서 기존의 가치체계가 전면적으로 부정되고 재편되어가는 시대였다. 따라서 한암의 눈에 비친 당시 불교계의 상황은상당히 심각했다. 그는 특히, ‘승가 정체성의 혼미’, ‘지나친 선 근본주의’,‘깨침의 개인적 안주’, ‘막행막식과 무애행의 혼동’ 등에 대해서 많은 우려를가지고 있었다. 한암의 평생은 이러한 당대불교의 문제점을 해결하기 위한대책을 강구함에 있었다. 그것은 다섯 가지로 분류된다. 첫째, ‘청정한 수행공간을 확보’하는 것이다. 둘째, ‘청정한 승가공동체의 구축’이다. 셋째, ‘불교전통(종통)의 확립’이다. 넷째, ‘깨침의 대사회적 실천’이다. 다섯째, ‘계행의 준수’이다. 특히 한암은 계행의 중시를 통해 삼학을 복원시키고자 하였고, 이는 불교, 더 나아가서 선 본래의 모습을 회복하는 것이기도 한다고 생각하였다. 그렇기 때문에 한암은 평생을 통하여 일관되게, 스스로는 물론이고, 학인들에게도 엄격한 계율의 준수를 요구하였다. We should consider two respects at the same time in order to understand Hanam. One is the disposition of his own nature and the other is his view on and countermeasure against the situation of Korean Buddhism in dark ages under the rule of Japanese imperialism. He spent all his life on figuring for the problems of Korean Buddhism of the time. His suggestion can be summed up to five topics : First, to secure the place for purifying meditation. Second, to build the purified community of monks and nuns. Third, to establish Buddhist tradition or the tradition of Buddhist order. Fourth, to practice the fruit of the enlightenment in society. Fifth, to observe the precepts. Especially, he tried to restore three disciples through making much of the observance of the precept, which he regarded this, by extension, as recovering the original essence of Seon. |
